If she's writing the book, that means she has her mitts, or will have her mitts on the 5D2 sooner than the public...probably had to sign non-disclosure agreements and such, but would be interesting to know what is planned for this camera, so all of the speculation can rest.

To publish something of reasonably quality, she would need that camera at least six months before the publication date. That would put the fully functional camera in her "mitts" around now. Either the publication date is speculation, or Canon is saving the premier for something spectacular and doesn't want Nikon or other competitors seeing the stats till premier, which would then logically be very close to sales dates.
Based on the rebates, though, I wouldn't expect to see a 5DII announcement before mid-July when the rebates cease; Canon and its retailers need to clear out current stock.
Looks like the beginning of August is going to be the 5DII wet dream come true.
I guess one way would be to call her up and ask her if she has it in her mitts
Why does this crap have to happen? I mean seriously!
I still want a 16-35 before I go FF. The 5d2 will be like 5d2X what I can afford, so I'll get a used 5D probably. However, I wanted to have that 16-35 before then!
Argh, so much stuff to buy, and such a not understanding fiance.

I am not surprised that there will be a replacemet for the 5D soon but I am sure surprised that they would call it 5D MarkII though...
I was hoping Canon would abandon the 5D series, and make a huge splash with something new. Something like an Elan 7D, a.k.a. cheap full frame for the masses, priced to compete with the $1700 Nikon D300. Or perhaps something like the mythical EOS 3D, a weather sealed full frame high speed camera to compete with the Nikon D3.
I'm afraid the name "5D Mark II" dampens my optimism somewhat, as it implies the replacement model will be consistent with its predecessor --- both in its conservative (ie bland) feature set, and in its target demographic (ie people who can afford a $3000 camera).
I was at the camera shop today, and I said I don't know how to remove noise from photos, and ISO 1600 is noisy. (there was more to this conversation, like how I've never had to shoot higher than ISO 800 for what I do).
The guy at the counter said, switch to Nikon D3 or300? I'm not sure their brands and names. It appears both exist, but what one he said, I don't know. I'm in the minority at the camera shop I go to locally, they all shoot Nikon.

Lol..im sure if you asked canon VERY nicely, they would delay the launch of a new DSLR until you have had your fill with a 16-35!!!
Think this is the problem (as I have regretably come to the conclusion as of late) is that most people in camera shops are considerably less informed about cameras and most aspects of photography than you yourself are after doing your own research and asking questions on forums like this one.

I had a salesman tell me that Canon update their digital cameras every eight years. Some of these guys just make it up when they don't know just to look informed.
The 5D is a fantastic camera so the new one will no doubt be amazing.

what is also funny is how can anyone even come close to guessing the price of the 5D II?
I laugh when people put such a low price tag on it!!!!!
The 5D can be had w/ the current rebates for 1900! that is well within the D300 range.
Last but not least, I know everyone says that the 5D is outdated, but a friend of mine who is a wedding shooting is looking to sell her D300 to get one of those outdated 5D's.

Oh come on. It's called maximizing sales and it is about trying to get a complex product to market with all that has to happen to make that go successfully.
What do you want them to do, publish their whole product roadmap on the internet with product introduction dates, feature sets, projected prices etc...? That would be pure lunacy from a business perspective.
