p.3 #1 · Price of Used 1Ds Mk II in 12 Months

I am sticking with my prediction. There is what is for all practical purposes a low click (8700) 1DSMK2 on Buy/Sell at $3500 and worth every penny of it. It has been there a few days. I thought it would go in a day when first posted and it did not. And ya can't blame the Canon rebates on this one. People in the market for this quality don't care about a $200 - $300 rebate on an XXD camera

Now fast forward one year and give me a price. It ain't gonna be $3500.

Give me break and cut the condescension. You argue that 1Ds2 prices are not an issue of the 5D2 (as some debate) but IS an issue of a mythical 1D3 replacement- and I'm off track? What a crock.

What will effect 1Ds2 (or any cameras used) sales: competing camera(s) that drive up used 1Ds2 sales volumes (and thus prices down) as people shift. The first body that could effect that number would be any 5D2. Baring that, normal depreciation of a $200-300 or so a year.

I did forget to mention the mythical Sony A900 - but keep your powder dry on that one if your expecting 1Ds3 resolution prices far below that of the 1Ds3. Same goes for the D3x. Fine cameras they may/may not be when released, but neither Nikon or Sony are going to do users a favor by (relatively speaking) giving them away and precipitating a price war.

As for ebay prices - take out the low ball idiots and the corresponding high-fliers and you get $3563 for a used 1DS2 - given that the notoriously variable ebay pricing results come within 10% of my $3800 ballpark, how is that 'significantly below'? If you're going to make an argument, try and do a good job.

The mythical 1D3 replacement? I would suspect that 1.3x line to be dropped entirely before they derive a high-MP 1D3II. Too many issues with noise/IQ trade off as you start stuffing MP on a crop sensor, even a 1.3x. I also suspect the 1D3 AF fiasco and the advent of the Nikon D3 and it's remarkably low noise, AF performance, FX/Dx modes and high frame rate (for a FF) will have also done a lot of damage to the likelihood of any 1D3II

Interesting thread. My dream camera is the 1DsII, but my budget is only around $3k so I'm fine waiting 6 months to a year till prices drop. Have a 1v and 1D2 that are working just fine now so I can afford to wait. And I'm not a pro, though I have sold a number of photos at charity auctions, so my income isn't dependent on having a certain body or number of MP.

I tried the 5d, thinking it might hold me over till I could afford the 1DsII, but it had a lot of dust in the viewfinder and on the sensor direct from the factory and the build quality just didn't thrill me, Even though the picture quality was excellent, the body felt like my 30D-IR and certainly not what I would expect in a $1900 camera. I'm fine w/ that on a $1000 body but not on a $1900 one. And the small number of AF points, their arrangement and the camera's focus speed made me realize it wasn't worth it in my opinion. I guess the 1v (awesome camera by the way) and 1D2 bodies have me spoiled.

Every time I pick up my 1v or 1D2, I think, this is quality, this is how cameras should be built. And when I use them, it just confirms that the 1 series is the way to go.

Quite right - normal gradual depreciation will take it's toll. The 1Ds Mk1 is the perfect example. It's roughly 6 yrs old KEH still sells the for roughly $1800. 1 series bodies while they depreciate, tend to do so slowly vs. pro-sumer units - baring one-time cuts from directly succeeding bodies as in the 1Ds3/Ds2.

Edit: use the 1Ds1 as a proxy. Roughly $8000 in 2002, Roughly $1700 today (KEH), ~6 yrs, advent of 1Ds2, etc. Equates to roughly 22-23% depreciation per year.

HOWEVER that straight-line number would of course be skewed by the 1x hit from the 1Ds2's release, so the real depreciation rate before and after the immediate drop from the 1Ds2 would be lower than 22%.

While 1Ds2, 1Ds3, etc prices drop yr/yr, the relative values of camera bodies will also stay within some harmony - yes, you might get a 1Ds2 for say $3000 in 12 mos, but any camera you sell to buy one will be corresponding lower - or more so depending on what model line.

Anyway, enough debate, we'll see a year from now.

My guess is $2k based on the rumored 5DII spec - 16MP FF. I suspect that 5DII will be $2.5k instead of $3.5k given the strong competition from Sony and Nikon (finally!). There is no point for 1DsMkII to be more expensive than 5DII then - even though 1DsMkII has weather seal and a bunch of features that 5DII may lack.

I'm going to skip your screed (and all future ones) and suggest you learn to read.

The fact that the original 1ds is still more than a used 5D that has more resolution should give you a good indication of things to come.

Not to mention it doesn't have any of the issues of the III series...

Hey, if you want an 1-series FF body that can focus, 1Ds2 is still the latest

My opinion is that the price will hold pretty steady until the 5DII is announced. If the resolution of that camera is close to 16 megapixels I'm sure the 1DsII will take another tumble in price. I would expect if the 5DII is close in resolution that the 1DsII will likely be a few hundred below the 5DII retail price. That is expected to be around $3,200 so I think you'll see 1DsII in the 3k range (+/- a couple hundred) for low shutter counts at that time. After that I think the slide in price will be gradual but also inevitable.

I sold mine when I could still get 4k for it. Anything less than that and I'd have been hard pressed to let it go.

Hard to speculate on this one... all depends on Nikon's moves and the specs of Canon's 5D replacement(s). You can argue that the 5D is not the same market segment as the 1D series bodies but there are many professionals who use the 5D and I suspect that if Canon boosts the 5D2's AF a bit there will be many more.

I also think that as the price of the Nikon D3 falls so will the 1Ds2 prices. Don't forget that until the D3 Canon had absolutely no FF competition, which probably kept used prices of 1Ds bodies artifically high over the years.

Also consider that Nikon professional bodies depreciate at much faster rates than Canons for some reason. You can pick up a used D2X for a song now and I suspect the D3 will be a used bargain by the end of next year.

I recently bought a Ds2 and if I had managed to dredge up an additional $500 would seriously have considered a used D3. It's an excellent camera and feature-wise is years ahead of the Ds2. Next year I might do the switcheroo if I feel the need for auto-ISO and liveview in a professional body. I sure as heck don't expect Canon to offer such a package for under $4K.

Gee, what's gas gonna be in 12 months if you're running on empty you need it NOW.
Same holds for digital bodys...if you need an upgrade think of all the shots you'd miss in a
year of waiting around for a better price!
