Thanks Peter, it looks like it's store bought, I let Trey Neil and Jim Victory play with it yesterday at the zoo. I think I'll have to make a couple of more. Trey will probably right up a little something on his experiance with it and what his thoughts are.
I'm a dummy. I think I get it. This is not JUST the acrylic light diffuser, it is the acrylic light defuser and the respirator filter. The diffuser is just there as a handy mount.
Dave , here is the component list for the Hickspodisc.
I had to use two of my cheap crystal filters , one was a uv ( for the clear glass) the other was a polarizer for the ring,( i needed the depth) I put the uv glass in first then the respirator filter then the diffuser on the outside, then the little ring that held the glass in , the diffuser had no effect what so ever, it just protected and sealed the cloth type material of the filter. the filter is all that is really needed. nothing else.
I found another alternative, although an obscure one. Our Lindhaus vacuum cleaner has these little white rectanguar HEPA filter pads. I tried using one of those for white balance, and saw the same kind of difference between AWB (too yellow), coffee filters (too blue), and the filter pad as Tom was seeing with the 3M respirator filter.
I just researched this a little bit and discovered that, surprise, these filters are made by 3M. Probably the same stuff.
Just when you thought you had answered every question on this topic . . . . .
Any tips on how to get the ring off that holds the glass in? I've been messing around with an old filter so I can give your L Series Hickspo Disc a try, but I can't seem to get that little ring to budge.
Thanks again for sharing such a great idea. You definitely get an "A+" for creativity and innovation! Hope you've already filed for a patent!
I posted my experience with the Hickspodisc in another thread but I would like to state that his thing works. Not only did it improve my postprocessing time it improve my knowledge of how WB works on the 1D.
With the T series Hickspodisc I was able to set up a custom white balance within a few seconds giving me dead on WB. It was so simple and effective that it is easy to use on all of your shots for that perfect WB.
Tom should receive the FM award for innovation and implementation of a very inexpensive and effective Custom WB tool.
Do you have any idea how much money he has saved everyone, who was considering buying the Expodisc.
Thanks Tom!

Tom... next photo shoot, I want your autograph before you forget all us little folks with your new found fame and fortune... I know how you celebrities get!
All this is good for us! I do own an Expodisc, but man would I have jumped all over the Hickspo Disc. Now all I need to do is keep reading for the new Hickspo Disc for all my big glass...300 2.8 and 400 2.8. Anyone tried it yet for these lenses?
I feel badly for the next person that tries to list an Expo Disc in the Buy/Sell forum. I can see the dozens of flames already..."$100?? Don't you know you can get a Hickspo for under $10"
