...on July 10th. I knew I'd get you to read this. Well, this is according to Amazon which we know can be off by a lot in terms of release date. At the very least it is available for pre-order for $499. This price could change too, I've seen Amazon make a prediction on a price and be off substantially. This must be gem to cost more than my current Nikkor 50mm f/1.4. Sigma and Zeiss cartel controlling 50mm prices?
There's a few Sigma lenses I hear faintly calling my name, the 70-200, 300mm f2.8 and the 50mm 1.4. I think the 50mm 1.4 will come in cheaper even if not immediately. Give 'em a couple of months, they'll come to their 'sensors'.
Sigma have a massive amount of excellent lenses for users of crop sensor cameras (50-150 2.8, 30 1.4, 10-20), and for FF cameras (150 macro, 70-200, 12-24 and Bigma). I like that they offer HSM primes too. I just wish they had HSm on their 24-70 2.8 lens and charged roughly the same as it costs now. I'd buy it in a second. Their EX lines are fantastic.
I don't understand the problem with their QC, I think it's rare that they occur and the internet megaphone is what causes these rumours. If you get a bad one, then send it in for replacement within the warranty and once you have a good one, you continue to have a good one forever.
Personally I'm not that interested in this lens as I have a Nikon 50 1.8 that I rarely use and am thinking of selling because of this.
