p.1 #1 · 1D MK II can't change from CF to SD vise vesa

Hi all

This is kind of strange. When I try to use the change card button on the back to change from CF to SD or vise versa, nothing happens. The LCD does not light up to show the changing card menu etc. When I use the display button and scroll over to the folder tab, I can access the change card menu. The strange thing is in display mode, the same change card button becomes the magnifying button, and in that context the button works correctly. Is there something wrong with the camera, or did I do something dumb in the menu settings to cause this? And FYI, in the main menu the card are not set to back up mode, so they should be available as two different cards, and I have reset menu, custom function, and personal function to default. Please advise, thanks.

Johnny

I am not sure, but mine mysteriously started doing the same things just before I sold it. Yes, I disclosed issue, but could not find a solution other than taking out one card and camera would then automatically pick the other. I tried reinstalling the latest firmware, but that did not fix it either. Very curious indeed.

Yeah, I tried firmware as well. I also found another member who has the same issue. I've tried google, but given the nature of symptom it is hard for me to research into this problem using google.

BTW, using the display button is faster then popping one card out to force it to change to the other card slot.

Normal behaviour on a Mk II. You need to go to the display button and scroll over until the folder icon lights up green. Now you can activate the change card function.

If you have owned or used a MkII N, this procedure is illogical. Yet thats how it is. I first found out about it on my 1DsII as she was just coming to the aisle. I needed to flick over cards and it wouldnt go....I was used to the 1DII N way of doing things. I resorted to pulling the card out to force it over.

RTFM later on showed what was happening. Thats the way it is dude. Sorry.

I think this depends on whether this is new behavior or whether the user just hasn't found out how to do it yet.

I remember the swapping being very un-necessarily awkward on the 1D2 - from memory you have to be in folder view and then do the swap.

It's one of the reasons I was glad to upgrade to the N.

I'd certainly check thoroughly first before sending for repair

1D2 and 1Ds2 is that way, the manual will confirm it.

The 1D2N is better, and the 1D(s)3 is weird again in a way that I don't quite get why they had to make it complicated again (in a different way than the 1D(s)2, of course). Or I am just dumb

I find the 1Ds3 quite easy actually, but I'm used to the 5D style of one wheel doing one function and the other dial doing another

Ok, so I have my 1Ds3 set to "auto switch cards". It starts on the CF and is meant to overflow to the SD if needed. Say that I want to switch to the SD _now_. If I am not missing something (and I must, because you find it easy), I have to go to the menu and switch the "active" card from 1 to 2. This, compared to pressing a dedicated button on the back and turning a dial once, seems not all that easy. I didn't count the clicks but it's more than one

I have tried various combinations of dials and the FUNC button on the back, with no suitable results (other than finding myself accidentally in sRaw because my eyes are slowly reminding me of my age). What am I missing?

Sorry, I know, I should get the manual out, but that's in the office and I am ah so comfy in bed now

Press the function button on the back (either once or twice until the card icons are visible on the rear screen) and turn the dial next to the shutter release

Coming from a 1D MK II N, that function made no sense to me at all. Strangly, I could have swore the manual said I can change card directly by using the change card button rather that having to go through the display menu. I can't confirm this now as I've just sold the 1D MK II under the assumption it was semi defective, which I disclosed to the buyer and was discounted accordingly.

Doh. Just found an online manual, and it does say something about using the folder menu and nothing about using the buttonf or direct access. I feel slightly sick in the stomach.

Darnest thing just happened. Buyer didn't like the weight of the camera, and we just reversed the transaction! I can sell it at the regular price again!

Thank goodness for the search function - I was having a problem switching the cards and found this. It is very awkward to do but at least I now know how to do it...

This is the the worst feature of the MK2 bizarre menu system. I find it easier to just turn it off, pop the card I don't want, turn it back on to make the other card the default, and insert the card I switched from.

Shouldn't that be RTF-PDF?

I imagine once you get used to the 1D Mark II's menu system, it becomes second nature, but it never did for me. The Mark IIn is slightly better, but nothing compared to my Mark III or 5D Mark II for ergonomics as well as being intutitive.
That being said, I have (younger) friends who can text message a paragraph in mere seconds, while it takes me twice as long to reply 'see you then'.
