Well. there are more powerful hotshoe flashes from Quantum and Metz, for example (e.g., http://www.qtm.com/QFlash/).

For iTTL and CLS, what's better than an SB-800? The answer is several SB-800's.

But if you want the ultimate in light control and power, get strobes and light modifiers instead of hotshoe units.

Adding a Quantum Turbo SC improves it greatly It can also make it all melty.

It would be nice if Nikon made something like the Q-Flash.

Been there, done that with a Quantum pack and SB-800's. In fact, you can cook a speedlight with almost any external power pack.

What features are you trying to improve upon? What features are you trying to use and are looking for? What do you want to do with the new flash?

The upside of the SB800 is that it is small = portable, built in fresnel lens = a certain amount of beam focusing, fits in a hot shoe, works off camera as well and most importantly works with the Nikon Creative Lighting System, so it can be optically fired from another strobe while still using TTL metering.

The downside of the SB800 is that it is small = not as powerful as some other larger strobes, built in fresnel lens = no bare bulb and no on strobe modifiers.

So, it really depends on what you are planning on shooting. If you want something small and lightweight for doing events, then you probably want an SB800. If you want to do a lot of studio work, then you probably want something larger like an AB800.

Quantum Q5D, but it's bigger, needs a external pack, needs added light modifiers and needs a camera adaptor and costs 2.5 times as much as an SB-800.

The SB-800 is simply the most capable speedlight ever made.
