p.2 #1 · 16-35L II vs 35L - for those who own both

I should add that I use the 24L and 35L each more than the 16-35L, simply because pretty much all my recent work is indoors, while when I was shooting landscapes the 16-35 would definitely see more action than a fast prime which simply isn't all that necessary. I am sure that if / when I ever actually get out of the house again and get to see some nature, I'll take the 16-35 with me and not the 35L (the 24L still may come for night city scenes).

stanj you are completely off base with the bypass charge.

I am not in need of money. I just hate having gear that I do not use. and I love this 16-35II, and i am worried that i will not reach for the 35L enough to justify having it.

I was just wondering what other folks who have been in this position have done (assuming these people are out there). I was attempting to learn from other people and their experiences.

i'll probably hang onto it for a few months at least just to see what my needs really are.

The OP has my support. It seems a perfectly reasonable & legitimate post to me!

I have both, and use both. I wouldn't sell the 35L.

I had both, keeping the 35 was a no brainer. I sold the 16-35 (ver 1) and bought the 14 II for wide, and talk about a nice lens, it blows the 16 end of the zoom away. I'm sure the new 16-35 is better than the old and if you need the zoom, well you need the zoom.

So i recently acquired a 16-35 II and quite frankly I love this lens. It is on my camera all the time.

I love the 35L as well, but I have a feeling that it will be used less and less due to this lens purchase (i also have the 24-70L).

Has anyone else that owns both experienced this? I hate to break up the holy trinity but am afriad i will not use the 35L that much.

I do have both as well as 24L. I got 16-35L for travel convinience and mostly for range between 16-24. Another alternative - 14L mk II is very expensive. Also amazed of this new zoom IQ. First zoom I don't want to sell next day ) and actually only one zoom from 11 lenses I own.
24L/35L are different story to me, both super fast and sharp. Don't think I will sell any of them soon.

All I have is a 35L and 135L.

I wish I could have a 16-35 instead for more versatility. And replace the 35L with a 50L since the 35L and 16-35L overlap and just use the 50L as my primary low-light lens.

A 16-35L, 50L, and 135L would be a nice light travel kit.

I keep debating to myself on trading my 35 & 17-40 for a 16-35 II but I like having access to speed. I never tried the 16-35 I or II either but luckily I have a 17-40 & 24-70 to cover but I know I'm going to want to try that 16-35 II at some point when I get the extra funds

Just purchased 35L couple a weeks ago. I always liked 16-35L for itīs ultra wide capability and of course itīs good quality.
My main point to get 35L was to minimize distortion in studio and style shooting.
For low light 1.4 is unbeatable.
If youīre not short of cash donīt get rid of it. You may "find" it again later!

God I hate self-appointed forum cops! The OP didn't even say he was selling anything! Get a life.

and stanj, what is this to you: "Has anyone else that owns both experienced this?" looks like a frigging *question* to me... no?

Look, I already apologized. I guess you missed that part while policing. And I answered the _presumed_ question, which I later found to be actually there. I answered it even twice.

I realize that some people, like you, get everything correctly on the first read and never misfire. I am not one of these. I realize that while being in bed with high fever I should have acted more prudently, but how clearly were you thinking last time you were down with 104F/40C?

Then again, you are just as guilty of selective reading. What's your excuse today?

Stan, don't worry about what someone else thinks (I sure as heck don't!, hah!).

Seriously, you apologized and that's that. I wouldn't worry about it.

Oh, and if I had a fever of 104, my ass would be at the ER, not FM :P Isn't like 105 when your brain starts cooking? Maybe I had a 105 before, because I think something happened to my brain.

The 35 has been my favourite lens for a while on my 5D. Just got a 16-35I this week. It's not as good as the 35 with my initial testing. I bought it for travel and landscapes. I reckon I will use it more than the 35L but I still like what the 35 produces more. Hard to pick one or the other for when I shoot indoors.
