I was at work this morning & one of the managers insisted I take a pic or two of these birds, he said they aren't common around here (Portland, Or), what are they?
Lil- The only place you are likely to see as Western Tanager in the Los Angeles Area is up in the Ponderosa Pine forest of the Angles Crest. They are birds of this specific forest throughout most of California, only very rarely ranging out of that habitat. I've seen them in and around Charlton and Chilao and Buckhorn. They do tend to leave SoCal for the summer an head more to the north.

this was pure luck, the pics are cropped I normally don't have my gear with me at work, but it is headshot week there, so I was fully equipped, except my 2x extender & my 50-500 were at home, had to make due with the 70-200 f/2.8L IS ... such a tough task
