p.1 #1 · Hummingbird bath time

1, 2 & 3 - I'm still working on the best lighting method. Because of poor lighting, so far I am using flash. With 100-400 at 400mm plus extension tube, DOF is very shallow. To get at least f11, I am having to shoot at ISO 800 or 1600. Need to get my flash closer.

Oh man Tony, I still have memories of your hummers in the bath last season I am sure you will get the flash dialed in, color looks great. #2 is cool, this guy thinks he is a penguin #3 and #5 just wonderful, must be most fun to watch them.

These are really neat shots, Tony. Have you tried the better beamer? I got a kick out of #4: he is really getting in to it! Nice job.

Great shots especially the one with the little guy lying on its side. Precious. We have those critters around our feeder all year and they always pick up your spirits? (and try to chase you away if you get too close)

Thanks, Dave. I could get a better beamer, or else a longer extension cord for my flash off-camera, or a slave flash.

Tony,

these are just beautiful. At those ISOs your still getting lovely color. I find that hummers really don't worry about me. I can be hanging a feeder & they'll be right there to drink from it while I'm still holding it. But I have no bath shots either so what do I know.

Beautiful shots...

Fabulous shots, Tony. Wonderful color, detail, and great hummer behavior. The first one really caught my attention, but I love the expression on the face of the bird in the last shot as he notices you watching him bathe. That does it--I'm hauling the fountain out of the basement today. Thanks for posting.

Thanks, Rob. In the hot weather later in the season, they will fly through the spray from our lawn sprinklers.

Thanks, Lil. I can get them to land on my finger if they are really looking for food, but when bathing they insist on having much further separation. At 5-6 feet, I am pushing their limit. I would be better off with a 500 or 600mm with extension tubes. When they bathe in a small stream, our sneaky cat will sit patiently on the bank hoping to lunge on a bather.

Thanks, Carole. I have a lot of long waits between baths and get a sore back waiting. Because I am so close, I have to sit with my eye to the viewfinder and both hands on the camera. If I so much as twitch my little finger, they fly away.
