p.1 #1 · 1d file numbering

Quick question, since I dont have my manual handy.

Is there an easy way to tell the total number of shots taken with a 1d? I have three different cards and each one seems to have its own numbering sequnce...

...ie: card 1 4,028
card 2 1,345
Card 3 346

I know I can add them, but as I add more cards, this would be a headache. Am I missing something or do I have my numbering preferences set up incorrectly?

Thanks

I think to find out how many times the shutter has been tripped you have to send it to canon as only them can find out with a special machine!

But if you have the camera set up for continuous numbering, the numbering should remain consistent when you change cards. Make sure you have the camera set that way, and then try formatting the two cards with the lower numbers in camera before using them again.

It's on the third menu... File Numbering, should be set to Continuous.

What happens when you take > 10K shots?

Mine cycled back to xxxxx01....I tried to 'create new folder', but when you format the card, it erases the newly made folder and defaults back to the original folder and low file #s....for me it's not a problem, because I may be able to keep count on how many times I 'turn it over', but it could cause file naming confusion...

makes it really difficult to know how many times a 1D has been fired....anyone know how to keep the 1D really on track with it's file counting?

It only has four digits, so you have to keep track yourself somehow. I use Breeze Downloader Pro to automatically add a fifth digit when I download the images -- e.g., when I stick a CF into my firewire reader, XP detects it and automatically fires up DL Pro, which in turn automatically creates a new directory named for the date the images were made (or multiple directories so named if the card contains images made on more than one date), downloads the files, renames them, checks to make sure they downloaded, then wipes the card, exits, and fires up BreezeBrowser (my image browser of choice) in the new directory. Under my particular naming choices, for example, 771E3627.tif gets renamed automatically to (because I've rolled over the odometer five times now) 1D-53627.tif. Downloader Pro has lots of other handy automatic file renaming and directory creation features.. highly recommended, and cheap.

Hey Nill,

Thanks for the reply...I currently use BB and DLPro...unfortunately I can't figure out how to make DLPro rename the files using a 5 digit #. I can make BB rename files in any given folder (but not how to automate it), but not at the time of download...

How do you get DLPro to expand your file names to 5 digits, or is that something you have BB do?

TIA,
Mick

I use the "job code" feature. My rename string is %T1-%J%r and it's set to "Prompt for Job Code every time Downloader is run." My "job code" is just the fifth digit. For my S400 I enter 0, because it hasn't rolled over yet (and probably never will), for my D60 I enter 1, because it's rolled over once, and for the 1D I enter 5 because it's rolled over five times. DL remembers the last job code you used, so it's usually still 5 and I don't have to change it -- I only have to remember to change it if I'm dl'ing from a different camera than last time. With only one camera that wouldn't be a concern.

So, my S400 shots get renamed as S400-0xxxx.jpg, my D60 shots as D60-1xxxx.crw, and the 1D shots as 1D-5xxxx.tif. Completely unique filenames, never a duplicate. If I had two of the same body I would do it a little differently, but this system works well for me.

The job code is a really useful feature. You could obviously use it instead for what it's really intended for -- literal job codes like a customer or order number, or "Smith Wedding," or something like that.

FWIW, the rest of my system is that I have DL put the images in automatically created directories named for the image date. Then I move those directories into subject folders, like \My Pictures\Soccer 2003b (Fall)\This or that team\2003-11-15.

This has worked well to keep me sane over 60,000+ images, almost 15,000 of which are on my website.
