p.1 #1 · How to replace an LCD screen on a 1D series

I asked around here if ti could be done, and it has been done before so I ordered the parts (AU$45)

I had some things to shoot for a few weeks so I left it until I could dedicate a few hours to it without interruptions and if I totally stuffed it up I could either send it to Canon or order some more parts for it.

I am not very good with this image upload thing so please bare with me and I will give as good a description as I can. I have the flu at the moment and as fellow men will know, when you get man flu it is a life and death type thing!

So first of all I got a little suction cup thingie I had in my draw. I really didnt think it would lift it up... but sure enough it did! If you dont have one you could lift it up at the edges with a small knife.

Unless you get really lucky you will be left with some sticky stuff left on the camera. I thought I might get some acetone type liquid and get it off but if you drip some of it onto the actual LCD you will have all sorts of problems getting it off

Enter the nail care kit my wife bought for me a while back. My comment at the time of "oh, cool, this will come in handy" came true as I havent used it foe anything else!
I slowly and carefully lifted, scraped and rolled the fibereous sticky material. This was the most time consuming part. Do it carefully and be aware of where you are resting you hand and again DO IT SLOWLY. One slip and its into the LCD!

Don't be stupid acetone will melt the camera plastic. Use hairdryer and the glue will peel off very easy. Othervise use eraser to remove the glue.

Where did you order new screen? How much does it cost?
How much for 40D screen?

Once it is all off, and you wont get 100% of it off and it doesnt matter if there are tiny little bits left. If there is dirt (as it was in my case) in the little ridge on the outside of the screen. That is the gap between the screen and the case. clear that out with the nail thingie with the camera turned upside down

Have a practice run with your sticker/gasket with the films on. The clear film comes off first. bit fiddly to get off and be careful not to touch it with with your hands as it will stick and it is pretty small so buggering the whole thing up because you got your fat fingers stuck to the gasket is easy to do!

Note: there is a certain way the gasket fits. Make sure you do a practice run with both films on the gasket first. even if you think you are a tech god, do it!!!

Then lay it down bit by bit. I didnt peel the whole lot off at one time as it gives you something to hold onto. Again, go slow. Make sure everything lines up as it should.

There it is in place

oh yeah forgot to mention.... clean your LCD before you stick the gasket down. I dont have a blower or a brush but used a static free cloth.

My assistant accidentally spilled a drop of nail polish onto her 1D Mark II, and it made a dent into the LCD screen

She used her fingers and rubbed/rolled the gooey stuff you shown in pic into a furball. The gooey stuff comes off easily if you gently rub it with your finger. Try to avoid using sharp object if you can

grab the suction cup again, fix it to the outside of the screen and place it in. This is the easiest part. Grab a cloth and push around everywhere the gasket was firmly to make a good seal.

All done! Id give it a 9.9 out of 10. I can see a tiny bit of the gasket through the screen but compared to what it was like before I am very very happy!

Thanks for posting right in the middle of my how to do! Real smart!!

Dont do either of those things. Heat there wont do the LCD any favours not to mention the air from the hair dryer blowing all the glue bits into the insides of the camera. Dont use an eraser either, the bits of rubber will end up inside the camera.
Best to do it the way I described.

Very nice job with the photos & explinations. I often have to remove glues which I suspect would be similar to what was used on the foam gasket used in this instance. I have found that a very light soaking with varsol or a generic replacement usually disolves or softens it enough to easily remove without attacking plastics. For a job like this I would likely apply small amounts using a Q tip and give it a few minutes to go to work. My first try would of course be to a section that pulled up with the old lens.

Thanks, hopefully it helps someone! I had already pulled the screen off and then remembered I was going to take photos. Thankfully my little S4IS point and shoot was near by.

I did think about using a liquid like you mentioned but having it as a solid is a lit better than having it as a liquid or gu in terms of getting it off. Some parts it could be done but right up the top of the screen there isnt much space there and would hate to get gunk caught under the ledge and it come out after the reinstallation of the screen. The gasket is no where near as sticky as I thought. I have read a how to on replacing a 20D screen and it said it was very very sticky. It is like any other double sided tape
