p.1 #1 · Maternity & Engagement? (pics)

I shot these photos free for this couple, as i have not done maternity shots before, and these were also for a good friend of mine. It's a great addition to my newbie portfolio. What do you guys think?

BLOG POST

All shot with 20d, 50 1.8 & 24-70 2.8 w/ gary fong dong thingamajig

basically walked around there apartment for an hour, and told them to stand in diff spots.. worked quite well i believe.

This is like the 3rd engagement type/style shoot ive done, so be easy on me! lol

btw, this was the only day I could do the shoot, as the baby is about to POP OUT!! I shot this the same day I was contacted, and they are LEGALLY married, just havnt had their ceremony shindig, which I hope to be the photographer!

Overall, I like them. I think you could have worked on her expressions a bit, though she definitely seems to be a friendly woman. For example, #8 makes her look a bit... evil. #9 makes her look like a teenager, and #10 gives her a very natural, happy, motherly look. I also think you would have been better off with less DOF in some of these.

Overall the set isn't too bad, not much variety IMO. I'm sure they'll be pleased though.

I can't comment much because I've never done an e-session myself

Question: is your site a wordpress template, or did you design it all yourself?

I like the pp for the most part and the shots. Agree with the variet bit - there seems to be a lot of looking up and tummy touching shots. Other than that great stuff.

Oh, the only other thing - squinty eye in #3!

I was also wondering about your site, because I really like it (as I said elsewhere).

Nice shots -- there was one that I really liked, but I kept getting lost trying ot count to it. It was one with her smiling, but not a huge smile. Terrible description, I know...

I have a lifestyle maternity shot tomorrow, and I was going to use the swings (and I thought I was so original). I really like your processing. Were you using predefined actions in photoshop? Or your own processing in photoshop? Or did you develop them in aperture/lightroom?

yup wordpress..

im one of those jack of all trade kinda guys (computer builder, network genius, wordpress hack monkey, yo-yoer, chainmaille armor maker, and now photographer)

I like to figure out how things are made so i can make them myself. (i know it could look better with hired guns, but I try)

It's good for what it is now anyways!

edit: this is the theme for anyone interested, you can see how i did a decent hack job lol..

The basic non heavily looks pics were all done in lightroom, as i shoot raw.

Sometimes I feel like playing, and I have the boutwells action pack, and a few of kubotas. I use these actions specifically for my album design and a select few from the bunch..

Remember too, this was only an hour shoot, and these people have never met me in their life before. And it was kinda rushed as she is PREGGO and about to pop and didnt wanna walk around all too much, it's funny the situations people are in and the pics that come from it.. I like hearing about what REALLY happens at the shoot, not just what great pics came from it.

Great description. I shoot in RAW as well and am only really using LR, so it's a relief to know that someone else does that (I plan to buy the Boutwells actions as soon as I actually have a newer version of PS). Great website, btw. You did a really great job with the shoot -- and I really like knowing what you did at the site -- you nailed it. The lighting, the atmosphere, how long you shot, how long you've known the couple. I almost think that really interesting photos can come from a more confined shoot. You have to get creative with what you are going to do. I work well with parameters, especially because it gives me some parameters to break. Good stuff.

OOh -- photo 9! I just went back and counted. I really like it. Were you on top of a wall or on a step ladder?

Oh -- and how did you shoot the Black and white? Did you shoot in color and convert it in LR?

I shoot RAW on a 20d and process everything lightroom (i wouldnt do photography if it wasnt for lightrooms uberness).. SOME of the pics get played with boutwells & kubota actions.. i use them for album design mostly.

I'm pretty much a monkey when I do photography, I was standing on an air conditioning unit when I took those REALLY top down perspective shots.

Thanks for looking more deepy at my pics deb, I appreciate it!
