Truthfully, that's quite responsible of you. I applaud the extra effort you're putting in. I'd probably just do some testing in my basement for 2-3 weeks.
I don't see how using the bodies will deliver results different than any of the other digital cameras (5D, D200, 1D3, 1D2, 40D, D2x, etc). It will only be better. Are you worried that you won't be able to operate them?

I'd pay your train ticket to come down to DC for the 19th. Spend the night at my house, my wife is a great cook. Just think of Amtrak as a really long subway ride!
The focus-point selection method between the Mk3 1 series bodies and the 5D/30D was enough to give me pause - so taking a non-stress gig to get accustomed to a new body is certainly reasonable.
Why is he doing this?
a) To test the new cameras, make sure they work.
b) Get familiar with how they work, and be able to operate them under stress.
If only all photographers were this responsible. There have gotta be some NYC wedding photographers out there willing to give eminavn this chance. The guy is incredible!
I don't see the need for this to be a joke. I plan to do the same thing when my new equipment arrives. I don't "practice" when I'm the only contracted professional recording the most important day of a couple's life.
