IIRC, Jason O'Dell (google for his e-book) has a basic list of in-camera settings, which essentially zero out most to include NR.
He points out that the Basic Settings use a different rendering engine than Edit Steps, and are applied globally.
Finally, he recommends making all non-basic adjustments via edit steps since they 1) use a faster engine, and 2) are non-global, i.e. applied only to the selected area. I suppose you can globally apply an edit step but why?
I've recently returned to NX because I get so frustrated with PS layers (don't pp frequently enough and forget the steps - relearn every time ) NR and sharpening are probably the most costly operations in terms of time. I find the trade-off of a little time vs frustration worth it. Too, for me NX does a much better job with rendering NEF colors than PS or LR.
Until recently I'd not paid attention to saving the steps and as a result, lost the whole session upon closing - like to see that handled a little differently - at least a nag dialog box or something.
Hope the recent reports about NX upgrade in beta bears fruit shortly.
My recollections,
Bob
