p.1 #1 · Lens for Equine Shoot

I am working with one of my clients, who has an Arabian Horse stable. He is looking for shots to put on his website. I let him know I would be willing to give it a shot but I had never worked with horses before.

What lens would you recommend? I am running a Canon system: 1D Mark II, 70-200 2.8L IS, 50mm 1.4, will be coming with me. Should I rent a 300 2.8L?

They will want some posed shots as well as trotting.

Thanks for the help.

Just use your 70-200mm. You will do fine! Arabians are so beautiful! Your client can tell you what makes a good Arabian shot. They made the ears perk and do some cruel things to make the tail raised high (hint: tobasco ouch). Perhaps they are friendlier there? Also, ask client for copies of Arabian magazines and study the shots.

ps: Your 1D markII and lens is PERFECT for this work!!!

I agree. 1dM2 and 70-200 is a perfect combo for the shoot.

I also agree--the 70-200 fits well with horses.

We had a thread about this around one month ago. Try a search.... as there's many good answers in there...

As for lens.... use your 70-200IS f/2.8. Now, he wants shots for his web site. Does he need shots of horses just standing or being ridden? What discipline are they being trained? Are you going to shoot shots of a breeding available for stud stallion?

The more information I have about this, the better I can help you. I've been riding since the age of 5 (I'm 48) & have owned horses for about 30 years of my life.

Get more information & feel free to PM me & I'll do my best to help. I've competed in several disciplines since the age of 13.
