I don't have models to work with so I have to improvise. In the end, I just want to capture myself in my messy nest.
Going to be hard to be proud of this picture knowing that there is alot of personal qualities to it. But I think viewers might be interested in this aspect.
Agree with john.... However, if you were a beautiful girl sitting in the same chair, you would get more compliments I am sure..... photography is so suggestive...
Would someone explain to me what is the least bit interesting about a non-sharp photo of a kid with no shirt on sitting in a chair in the middle of a room

His decision to post it online for others to see is kinda interesting.

You don't like? Move on. There are lot of photos here that I do not care for but I don't feel the need to be such a dope about it. Get over it and on to the next picture of a naked lady so you can get into a better mood.............
This isn't a compliments forum, it's a photography forum - he wanted people to be interested in the shot, and if he missed the mark and people don't find anything interesting, I'm sure he'd like to hear it - anyone sincerely looking for feedback would. John feels he's missing something (me too, apparently) and would like to know what. So defensive and it's not even your shot...if you think it's a nice photo, please, explain why, different opinions are great!
I's a plain old snapshot, the framing is crooked, he's plopped right in the center of a dull, static composition, the background is too busy, lamps/bags/pillowcases/shelves are protruding into the frame meaninglessly.
I guess the main problem with trying to call this a "photograph" would be that there would seem to be no thought at all regarding setup/lighting, etc. There is nothing here for us to think about, so therefore it is just an uninteresting snapshot, in my book.
Honestly, if there had been a naked girl in the chair in the same pose, my reaction would've been just about the same, in the case of this photo.
So, you did capture yourself in your "messy nest", but to be honest, it isn't all that messy, and it's not any sort of an *interesting* mess.

It is a snapshot in his life, lighten up a bit
True, but what is the point? Should we all just post snapshots? It seems that there are enough good photos on this forum, along with good comments to learn from, to avoid posting meaningless snapshots like this. The whole idea of a forum is to learn from others and improve, not post shots that demonstrate a lack of even some attempt to integrate some elements of lighting, composition, or emotion.
I am not trying to be mean here I'm just frustrated with folks not trying to improve their craft. It is laziness and ego. The lessons and tools are here for anyone to use and learn from, even a little bit, just pay attention to them, please.

C'mon Steve. Give the kid a break. He said he didn't have models to work with........Maybe he'll improve his self portrait after getting some constructive critiques.
Nygere - I'm not sure about the bed either. If you were going to leave it in, I'd rest my feet on the bed rather than having them on the floor. I'd like to see your new attempts.
I think I see what direction the OP was going with. Yes, it does need work in focus, alignment, and work on the bed in the foreground (I don't think it should be cropped out, but it would be good to see more of it). It's a photo of a kid sitting in his messy room. It does have a message, and with a little more work can be outstanding. Photos don't have to have amazing, unseen action occuring to make them interesting. It's also about mood.
Photo kind of reminded me of those rooms where people observe other people living, or something like that. And he's just bored and staring right back at them. Humorous.
Other than the fact the composition isn't great and the picture is crooked, I like it.
I think you failed in this attempt. I kinda see what you were trying to do here but had you put a bit more thought into you it, you might have pulled something decent.
- look at your horizon, it's not level...doesn't make the image artistic..just off
- half lamp sticking out of the l foreground...
- messy sides and background (used properly, could have add to the image)
Had you taken the exact same picture with lighting directed on you and the "Opportunity" sign; with a better crop and a level horizon, you might have had a photograph and not just a picture.
