These are captive wolves, taken at the Wild Canid Survival and Research Center located outside of St. Louis. It was founded in 1971 by Marlin Perkins, and today it is largely responsible for the survival of the Mexican Gray Wolf. They have the highest number of births and have released more Mexican Gray Wolves back into the wild than any other facility in the country. They also have successful programs with the Red Wolf, Maned Wolf, Swift Fox and African Wild Dogs, some of those to be posted later.
It was a rainy, cloudy December day when I was there, but I was happy just to have the opportunity to photograph them. Here are a few from that day.

Doug, you did a great job on all of these, looking forward to the rest of the series. We have some Mexican wolfs at a zoo near by, I have photographed them before, but the only way to do so is through a window again very nice series.

Thank you Bonnie. I was actually in the compound with the wolves. They were fencing off a section of the enclosure and had some guards keeping the wolves from the workers. I was asked if I wanted to shoot from inside the fence, and I said "Hell yea"! We were keeping a pretty close eye on each other, a couple came to within about 30 feet before turning away.
