It's a great camera, particularly given it's current prices. If you can live with its few modern day deficiencies that have been discussed alot then I would recommend buying one... I did.

In low light, it does not have the same clean images of the current crop of dSLRs, but it has a pleasing grain to the images.

iso 800, f3.2, 1/1600

iso 1250, f2.8, 1/1250
* One thing to note is the banding that is evident in high iso pics (iso 1000 and up)

In good light, it does as well as any of the current dSLRs.

iso 400, f3.2, 1/2500

The toughness and durability are a blessing

I picked up one in the buy&sale forum and shot some comparison photos with my 10D, I ended up selling the 10D. I picked up another one from the local Craigs list that had less than 3K actuations and is mint, I have no plans to sell it.

The focus is fast, the mirror return is almost instant, and the viewfinder is very bright.. as long as you shoot to use the full frame available, it is the best value out there.

Awful battery consumption is the main reason I mainly use my 40D. That is despite better ergonomics and bigger viewfinder. If it wasn't for that I think I could hold off the 1D Mk III temptation….

But you haven't answered the main question. Why do you want it? If it is to shoot sporting events on a budget then this one can't be beat. Then again, for other purposes other DSLRs may be a better choice.

i have a 40d and a 1D MArk IIN ....

but i just got a housing for surfing photography and i don't want to take any chances with my 1D IIn,that's why i was thinking in getting one.(same fit)
i would be using iso 200 max

do they use the same battery?

That would be correct just buy a couple of spares the 1D likes them. I have some Lenmars with a fresh charge not using the lcd all the time I can shoot 750 frames give or take. Tony have you got that 400 yet? Like stated before the 1D works best not cropped.

Modern DSLR's are better at high ISO of course, but that doesn't mean the 1Dclassic is unusable.

I saw one recently on a board for $650 with 85k clicks on it. I bought mine 2 years ago for $1400 with more clicks than that.

The speed of the AF is fantastic and image quality is more than enough for what I use it for. If I was printing larger than 8x12 I would probably pass but having said that I have a 20x30 print on my wall from the previous owner.

The price of the Mk II is coming down fast too, if I end up getting one of those for next season I might set up my original 1D as a remote.

I've used a 30D, a 5D, a 1d mkIIn, and a 1D original. Out of all of them, the 1D had the best colors no question. it really did have a special feel to it. high ISO wasn't the best, but it was a great 4MP camera... that said, 4MP is 4MP. but i still loved it... i'm sad that i sold it. oh, and if you've never used a 1D series camera before, you're in for a treat.

Not at all. I get about 300-400 shots with IS off and about 200-250 when IS on. As I mostly use IS on, that is a major handicap.

I bought a third party battery and for a while I was quite pleased. More than 50% more pictures. However, lately it developed an obnoxious bug: It just shuts down. It does not happen a lot but it's enough for me to stop using it. No warning at all. From full to nothing. It can happen after 10 shots, after 100 shots, none at all or not light up at all. Totally random. Regretfully, the store manager said there's no warranty on batteries.

Anyway, instead of the 40D be a backup for my 1D as I originally thought it turned to be the other way around. With the 40D I charge it up once or twice a month and that's it. And if the battery indicator shows one bar I don't mind at all. I just keep on shooting.

To me that single thing is so bothersome that ever since I got the 40D (about 5 months) less than 5% of my shots are made with it.

I would have bought more batteries but I plan to buy the 1D Mk III (after I'm convinced all AF issues are over) and it uses another type of battery. So, in the meantime I try to get accustomed to the 40D's ergonomics and viewfinder. A far cry from the 1 series but hey, at least it is reliable.

ISO 800 is very usable. I think that the low MP count helps here. I mostly stay at this ISO in my 40D as well.
