good start with a hew lens Chris...save this set in a folder and a month or so from now pull them out and compare with what you are producing then. I have found it quite revealing for myself at times. Force yourself to watch for good light

Well, I bought the 400 5.6 yesterday and had a play. Could not wait until today to shoot... something, anything... hopefully it flies!
Anyway, here are my favourites for the day. The learning curve is steep for this type of photography but I am enjoying it immensely.
Then all I can say is, you're a fast learner!! Great job!
Looks like you are having fun with your new toy! You did a pretty good job on the whites for a first outing. Great capture with the fish in the pelican's pouch! Keep them coming.
thanks Dave. I often do look back and some become cringe worthy after a while... =)
I know what you mean about good light and selectiveness. If not for the fish, the pelican would have been cut. I was so pumped about the new lens I would have shot all day, luckily I got hungry so I had to stop.

Hey Frank, I appreciate the compliment. At least I have exposure and composition and most other basics covered. Where the learning comes in is the focal length, knowing what works and doesn't work. It's also a fixed length so it forces one to be very selective, and when the times comes make it count.
The second hurdle is the subject. You get the 'judges' reject' pelican that is good for slow motion practice and then you get twitchy nervous little things that need more technique.
I really need a bird book so I can at least name a couple of them and more importantly their behaviour.
Thanks Tim, I guess you could compare the exposures here to shooting a wedding dress... gotta get detail! and in full sun...
Thank goodness for RAW, I had to tweak the exposure on two or three of them.
Planning the next outing now...
