Also just back from Hong Kong. Seems that a number of knowledgeable
dealers there also smell that the 5D replacement is on the way. Folks there refer to 5D as "end of line model".
5D will be replaced soon... that's for sure. At the very least it'll be a 40D with a full-frame sensor. Consider anything beyond that a bonus and you will not be disappointed.
5D will be split into 2 models. Lower end model will retail at sub $2000 and be basically a full frame 40D with a 13MP sensor, built in flash and slow frame rate (3 fps). ISO to 6400. Smaller VF image than 5D due to reduced size of prism. Camera will be pitched at the high-end amateur seeking FF over speed.
Higher end model will retail for $3199 on launch and will feature watersealing on a par with 1 series, higher frame rate (4.5 fps), and a 16MP chip. ISO to 6400. Better focus inc. focus to f/8 at centre point and x type points at the extremities of the focus ellipse (however still 9 point). Camera will be marketed as a pro model, appealling to wedding photogs and those seeking smaller form factor (similar approach to the launch of the 5D). AF micro adjustment available.
Both camera will launch at photokina. Expect a big fuss.

Seems a good guess to me. Though I'm not so sure if they will go the build-in flash route. One of the big benefits of full frame is a nice and bright viewfinder. Why chip that benefit away when you want to entice photographers to go full frame?

And that would totally butcher the flagship 1Ds Mk III sales. Why would Canon do such a stupid thing?
Erhh, why? Except for good guesswork on the lower spec 5D Mk II, there is little that seems realistic to me. No sources, no proof. I'm not saying he's wrong, no guarantees for that either, but a claim like this could use some substantiation.

So Antony.
word is Nikon took over marketing in Australia because of the leaks that emanted from Maxwells, Sounds like the "mole" has gone across to Canon .
Cant complain though; we all love a good leaker
If you are right there is going to be a lot of upgrade envy.
Cheers

I agree with you that his guess seems like a good one. I don't think the "higher end model" will destroy the 1DS MK III because the 1DS camera have a higher resolution sensor. I can't think of any other features the 1DS have at the moment that would justify the $7000+ for it, but that is one thing that I can think of at the moment.

The 5D definitely took a bite out of 1Ds Mk II sales. That was 12.8 vs. 16.7 Mpixel. With the proposed 16 Mpixel vs. 21 Mpixel, you're looking at a similar gap of about 30%.
"Butcher" may have been exaggeration, but still a high-spec 5D II like suggested will cause a noticeable dent in 1Ds Mk III sales. Especially if both have full weathersealing and very close fps rates.
5D will be replaced in September 100% guaranteed. Looks like they've stolen my specs for the upmarket version.
I agree, the likelihood of seeing a successor to the 5D at Photokina is so high it can be called 'certain'. But specs? I'm not sure.
***D series
**D series
3D?
5D [exit?]
7D?
1D series
1Ds series
That seems awfully crowded for a product portfolio. And if you want to keep it realistic, you have to compare this to the Nikon range, which is staggered/shifted compared to the price brackets of Canon.
D40/50/60
450D
D80/D90?
40D
D300
5D
1D Mk III
D3
1Ds Mk III / D3x?
So where would you place a 3D and 7D? The current 5D spot, above the price range of the D300, looks like sweet spot to me.
Oh, and in case it's not clear from the above, my guess is we'll see a 5D Mk II. Though I may be completely wrong off course.
I would just like to be able to get a 12 Mpixel ISO 6400 full frame camera at affordable price. If that means I can't have 6 fps, weathersealing, 45 pt AF, then so be it. 40D AF unit and 4 fps would be fine with me.
