I purchased Susi Lawson's first two instructional DVD's about a year ago. They are a wealth of information! I finally bought a Wacom yesterday and watched a couple of the sections again and then made an attempt. It has been about a year since I have tried Susi's techniques. I am fairly pleased with thte result. The Wacom seemed to make a huge difference!
The photo of my daughter Lillian and her bird was shot indoors with a flash. The Outdoor picture is actually Lillian learing to barrel race. I had to clone the horses head out.
Hi Fred!
First, thank you so much for purchasing my lessons and the acknowledgement! I think you are off to a wonderful start with these two examples!!
What an adorable subject you have ! Keep up the great work, I look forward to seeing more!!
Thought I would post my first attempt after buying Susi's CD also! I love what I have learned - even though I have a while to go to be on Susi's level - but it is SO fun learning!!!
I've been telling Susi that I'm going to purchase "Photoshop Magic". I finally ordered it yesterday, and can't wait to try it out. My question to you Fred(and you too Susi) is about the Wacom. I bought a small one a few years ago, but never really used it. It's tucked away in my desk drawer. Does it make a big difference. Do you only set it up when you're doing photoshop work, and then go back to you're regular mouse? Also do you really need a big one, or are the smaller ones good enough? Thanks.
I bought a rather large one and question whether or not I really needed such a big one. I think I could have gotten away with a smaller one. I still have the receipt. I may see if I get used to it for another week. If not, I'll return it and get a smaller one.
Fred: thank you - I really liked yours too! I have the smaller tablet- or I guess medium sized tablet and love it....it's small enough to put on your desk -my husband doesn't use it but it gives us enough room to still share the desk. Does anyone know where you can order separate tips for the pen?
Thanks!
sorry, I have not got email notifications, so excuse the delay in reponding!
Beautiful work JUlie!
Jon, Yes a wacom makes a HUGE difference in the natural flow and control of the brushes! You will have pressure sensitvity with the pen and this means it is easier to fade in and out as you would normally with a brush or pencil so this is very natural and extremely beneficial! I used the intuo 6X8" wacom and it is all the room I need for my 21 " Apple monitor on my PC and I put it where the keyboard area is and put the keyboard in front of the monitor. I also have a 24" imac and I use a 6.5X11" wacom for that setup as it is a wider screen. So, you do not need a large wacom!
I am very happy to see the results of my lessons! I encourage you to keep at it as you will improve and become more passionate about your work every day!
I forgot to say that a great place to buy a wacom is the Academic Superstore, they offer refurbished wacoms at great discounts and you do not need to qualify to buy these. my last wacom is a refurbished and it looks and functions as a new one.
Susi, I have the same Wacom that you have. I opened up one of my shots in PS, and tried to just play around by making a selection with the lasso tool. I kept running over the edge, and my selection would get screwed up It seems like I need a Wacom a little bigger, say maybe 3'x5'
Are there any tutorials about how to use the Wacom, or is just a lot of practice.

Jon, the wacom site has a lot of tips on their product! http://www.wacom.com/tips/
Do you have your wacom calibrated to the size of your screen?
Nope. Didn't know anything about that, but that sounds like the "ticket". I'll have to look for any instructions that came with it, God knows I never throw anything out, but I'll also check their site-thanks for the link.
