p.1 #1 · Scary pictures of a Cormorant in trouble....

Well, I got my "big" lens almost 10 days ago & all I'd had a chance to photograph was my neighbor's backyard & a dying rose in gray rainy skies. So today I took the time to take it on location. I actually had to go to two different locations before I got anything shot.

Anyhow, as I'm set up for something - - looking for a willing subject really -- out of the corner of my eye I watch a young Immature Double-crested Cormorant fly in for a landing in a tree, but lose it's footing. Next thing I know this happens.....

It was not until I got home that I realized the bird was injured or just got injured... But I can report that it flew off after the last frame....

Thanks for looking...... It was kind of scary to see it unfold.....

Lil
P.S. 50% crop - - it was on an island in the middle of the dam...

Hi Lil, good to hear that poor thing was able to get out of that mess. You have captured these images very well. Congrats for your new lens. Would like to know about your new lens. Is it 300-800 Sigmonster?

Thanks Jude....

Yes that's the one I ended up with. These are not the best shots of the day. I just needed to share these. It was very traumatic to see the bird was injured when I came home. At first it looked funny - - it was just hanging there. Now I'm kind of sick to my stomach about it. But I was glad to see it get lose & fly off. I hope it will be OK.

Tomorrow I'll post better shots which I got with it. I am happy with my first day's shots with it. I thought I'd do poorly - - - - only thing which went poorly was finding birds & then this poor Cormorant.

Nothing worse than feeling helpless. We almost accept it when we don't see it but very tough to witness. Glad to hear it was able to fly off, looks like significant damage to the right leg chest area.
I look forward to your next upbeat posting with your new lens!

You're right Karl - - poor bird must have been frantic.... I've seen them land in trees before & they are rather clumsy at times. But this one just really got into a mess.

I keep wondering who I should/could call on this issue.... Also, locating the bird will be hard. But it did fly off & hopefully to safer grounds.

I have better shots - - I just needed to share these.... Since seeing them on the computer I'm kind of shook up... I'm too emotional......

I'm amazed more of these guys don't get injured flying into trees. They always seem out of control. I realize that they aren't but it sure looks like it.

Hi Tim,

Almost every landing into a tree I've seen, looks completely out of control. But they do it & they nest in these trees, so.....

I hope the Cormorant is OK. To me all life is very precious.....
