p.1 #1 · 40D Focus Question

I just purchased a 40D - upgrade from a 20D. I was wondering what focusing mode 40D users apply for weddings and receptions. Also, do you use center point or let the sensors chose the focusing point? Just wondering how to get the best results from the upgraded auto focus system.

BTW, I shoot with the 17-55 2.8, 85 1.8, and 135 2.8 (soon).

Thanks,
Doug

Generally I use the center point, selecting another focus point with the joystick when it's appropriate. All the focus points are the cross type, unlike the 20D, where the center point was the best one. I never let the system choose the focus point.

Ditto.

OP, you need a wide lens. Nothing like 12mm when you are in the thick of things.

One shot mode and I vary the focus point as needed to properly compose by rotating the wheel. It's pretty fast and there is no delay if you think ahead about the types of shots you are going for.

For instance if I know I am going portrait in a moment I will quickly change the focus point so it falls on the face. If I have more DoF I will focus and recompose off the center point.
