p.1 #1 · nooBie with some questions

first off i'd like to say hello to all and great pics

ok i'm new to the photoraphy thing and on a lark went out and bought a new canon eos digital rebel xti 400d. i notice that the lens that came with the camera ( an ef-s 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 II ) seems kind of cheap lol

my question to all is which canon lenses to get for some good pic's ie; animal, action and closeup photos? I'm on a budget so i will buy them as time and money permit ........ i was looking at my first add-on to be this 70-200mm 4/L but not too sure about that...... i need alot of help i repeat i'm new to all of this

thank you all for your help and time on this matter

Doug

Doug, I think I would start with a 50mm prime. They are reasonably priced, lightweight and a blast to shoot with. You can take some great pics while you familiarize yourself with your camera. Won't be long until you know the lens that's best for the way you shoot.

Welcome to FM!

So for the short end, the 18-55 will work until you free up your budget. The lens is cheap, but with PP you can crank out some decent images.

Like pearlstreet said, you get a lot more bang for your buck with primes: the 50 f1.8 is like $80, and the 50f1.4 is $300

50mm is too short for animal pics, but for action and closeups it's money.

Used gear on the B&S forum is a win; the 70-200f4L should not be hard to come by.

Prime means a fixed focal length.

As opposed to a zoom lens, which covers a range (like your 18-55, or the 70-200).

Go out and taking lots of pictures!

They won't look good at first, but as you take more, you will improve.

Eventually learn about the features that your XTI gives you, and learn how to incorporate them.

To be honest, since you are new I would say don't buy more gear right now. Yes, the kit lens is pretty cheap & not the best, however it still makes images and you can learn a lot with it. What I would suggest buying is the book Understanding Exposure and use what you have.

After a while you will learn enough to know what lens will serve you best. I agree the 50/1.8 prime is an excellent budget second lens, but again probably not the best idea to mess with just yet.
