A client of mine has a Minolta 400mm f/4.5 APO G lens and the internal filter (back near rear element) is 42mm. He is looking for a thin CPL and possibly a warming filter for that lens. The internal filters are 42mm.
The filters don't need to be thin but it would be preferred.
I'll see what they have. The thin CPL in 42mm is going to be a tough one. For the CPL an external rotator would be the way to go, but they are hard to come by.
Terry - it wouldn't be practical to put an external rotator on that lens as it is a rather large lens - very similar to the Canon 400mm DO with a front element of something like 105mm. Also, the lens hood is VERY deep/large, much like the 600/4IS...
having the cpl internal seem to kinda defeat the purpose of a cpl. Ok maybe nor really defeat it's purpose but putting the filter in, getting it out to adjust, putting it back just to find your a mm / 1/16inch off.
I guess I didn't make clear what I was refering to by a rotator... a few years back I purchased a rear filter holder Cpl mounted in a frame similar to the factory filter holder, but it had the ingenious modification of a small gear drive external thumb wheel which allowed you to roatate the Polaizer without removing it. I don't know if they still make it.
I sold my 300 f2.8 Nikkor a few years ago and let the filter holder go with the lens... I always kick myself for doing that... I think I payed about $300 plus for it, but it was really slick. It was a real practical way of using it on a big lens...especially if you change from portrait to landscape position while employing the CPL.
You might call Kirk to see if they still have any.
