p.1 #1 · Keeping busy with birds

Hi

Its been a productive time on the bird photography front recently. This has included some species I haven't had opportunity to photograph before.

First up is a buzzard taken on my drive to the office the other morning

I also had a session in some nice light with some local Short-eared owls that were out in full vole hunting mode which was great fun.

A visit to the London Wetland Centre, a wetland centre created near the heart of London provided some interesting opportunities including

Shoveler

The first Gadwall I have had in front of the lens

and Great crested grebe

Another first the wetland centre produced was Ring Necked Parakeets which have formed a thriving population of nearly 20000 birds in the west end of London. There were numerous birds coming into a feeding station there but unfortunately the light was going fast when I finally found it in the reserve.

I decided to make a ground pod to try some low level shots of sanderling on the local beach. The pod is just a frying pan with a bolt to take a Wimberley head but early results look promising.

I have lots of other shots to show but they will have to wait until another post but I will finish off with another first for me which is a Slavonian grebe. This one in winter plumage.

Just for your info all the above shots were taken with 1Dmk3 and 500mm lens.

Cheers

Rich - what an excellent series - all wonderful, but the two owl shots (the second one in particular) stand above the rest for me. Awesome shooting

I like the series. I try but I've never been able to capture a water fowl doing the wing thing. Well done there.

The first is not a Vulture. Don't know what but do know it's a rapter of some sort.

Absolutely spectacular, these are all excellent. When I first looked at the dancing hawk I knew I was in for a treat. I agree with gerov about the last 2 owl shots, wow. Some of the best work I have seen.

All very nicely done. Great ingenuity too. I wonder if my wife would even miss her frying pan?

great series, really love the hawk photo. However I also like the owl photo when he/she is going in for the kill.

Buzzard is a variety of raptor in the UK - no relation to Vultures here in NA

These are extraordinary. You never cease to amaze me, Rich. Love the last short-eared owl, the Great crested grebe, & the Slavonian grebe series. Awesome.

Great Owls and great grebes. It's been a long time since i've seen a great crested grebe (i'll have to settle for my reddish egrets!)

Hi Rich, I have to agree with everyone else here that these are magnificent shots. The colors, sharpness and behaviors are wonderful. I must admit that I was also quite enamored with the last two short-eared owl shots. Wow.
