p.3 #1 · Which Canon body do you use for weddings?

Stud I don't think there is any difference in IQ between the 400D and the 40D. The 5D, any of the 1 series mark II or either of the 1 series mark III would be a step up in IQ useing the equivelent lenses. Glass and the person behind the camera are more important then the body.

Listen people, I agree with some of your comments. I've played with the 10d, 20d, 30d, 40d, rebel xti, 5d. They are beatiful cameras. Canon 1Ds and Nikons are nice too!

I understand that someone with talent and a $10,000 camera should know how to work the camera and SHOULD be able to get great shots. But what makes a great shooter? What truly makes a winning photographer?

Is a Rebel XTI not capable of a wedding, portrait, scenics, or even sports? If you bought two or three bodies, are they not capable of being a first body and a back up? Is the metering and focusing that bad that a wedding can't be done? Are you saying I cannot put a $5000 on my rebel like you can a 1 series mark III?

Wasn't a pentax K1000 a great simple camera back 20 years ago. How about a Nikon 8008s, F4s or F5? How about those Bronicas Etrsi and Hassy's, Mamiyas 645? They were all capable of great images. But a 10 megapixel rebel xti is not? Hmmm.

So what if its plastic. All I care about is image quality. Even the Canon XTI gives the 5D and 40d a run for its money as far as image(DPreview.com)...and the 5D is almost 5x more. I understand its not built like a Hummer H1, but its also not built like an wine glass either. That's why you have back ups. Isn't funny how pros use rebels as back ups. Hmmm.

Why should you be embarassed to show up with a rebel, nice lens and nice flash system? Didn't your clients see your porfolio before they hired you? Were they not impress enough to hire you? Or, do you still have to impress them by flaughting your Canon 1Ds in everyone's face, then find yourself spending hours on photoshop CS3 fixing them? These people should be called "Post-o-graphers. Or is it that you are insecure about your photography? I have never had a person look at my camera and been disappointed? Maybe if you show up with a Canon Elph, then they might look at you funny. The final product is want counts.

I understand there are better cameras out there than a Rebel. BUT why cant a talented photographer not be able to shoot a wedding or any event with one? I would think he could. He might have some limits but not enough to complete most photography jobs.

If I were to take the top ten photographers in the world and give them a rebel with a decent lens, is anyone saying they are not going to get great photos? Are they going to complain they can't function without there 20,000 camera? Is a lesser camera going to take away there ability to create stunning images? Hell NO! (Sorry I got carried away) I would think they would stand up, grab the Rebel or d40x and say to all of us "get the heck out of the way" because they need to get moving and start creating.

I don't know what it is about all this camera bashing. Let me make it plain and simple. A Canon IDs Mark III is not going to make you a better photographer, it might make shooting easier. Heck, I found it easy to shoot with all 15 cameras I've had in my lifetime. If you feel the need to buy a 10,000 camera go right ahead and get shooting, but more importantly spend some time knowing how to compose a photo with your beauty.

Note: Please dont assume i cant afford a better camera either, cause i can.

This is true in the sense that it won't improve your eye, but it can consistently make better images. Better images, believe it or not, are a defining element of better photographers!!!

Ah, very true, but it will unlock potential that you never had with your GEO!! Even at 5X the price of an XTi, the 5D is the biggest bargain on the market!

You've obviously never shot them side-by-side at 1600...

There might be a very very slight difference but is it a huge difference? Have you compared it at DPreviewcom and see a big difference, Really? Have you ever printed out of a 40d and a 400d at 1600 and seen the difference? If you are willing to pay 800.00 more for IMAGE quality than a rebel xti , it's ok, but i think you are wasting your money. My opinion is you are not paying 800.00 worth in image quality but in body quality. 40d is a stronger body, with more advanced features. I guess you have shot them side by side --send me the results so I can see them. Please use the same lens when you shot with both bodies ok.

Chuckle.

We all know that today's equipment makes us better photographers than yesterdays equipment. I can't capture an image worth anything unless I have today’s camera & lens. I'm embarrassed to show up anywhere if I only have last months superstar.

A zoom lens? Gosh! Everyone knows that a zoom lens can't compare to a prime! Hang my head in shame. I don't own a prime. Wait. I have a 50mm 1.8. I'm ok. I own a prime lens. What? 1.8. Shouldn't I have a 1.4 or a 1.2? Well. Yes. I should be able to shoot someone's eye and have their eye lashes out of focus. Yes. I'll go buy one. I'll be a better photographer.

My tripod. It's aluminum. Are you an amateur? Carbon fiber is the only way to go. Hmmm. That's not an Accra mount. Nobody who's good doesn't have a RSS system. Your camera doesn't even have a L bracket! Why do you even need a tripod? Can't you hold your own camera?

What lens are you going to use? A 35mm for the close ups and a 80-200 for the long shots. A 200? Don't you have a 4 or 500? Yes do have a 500 with a 1.4 magnifier.
Haven't found a use for them yet. You are a dipstick of a photographer! I want my sister shot with a 500 or better! What. The hairs in her nose? You get the damn kiss! I'll do my best. You mess up my sister's wedding and me and my brothers will make sure you never do another F..ked up job like this again! I'll use the 500mm. Did you realize she slipped him the tongue during the kiss? WTF!

I don't see my Mon in any of these pictures. Well, I will get down on one knee to shoot up at the dancers and the wedding table. Where's my Mother! Under that table over there. She's passed out. With a camera like that you should be able to make her look ok! We are paying you a lot of money. Just do it!

And I want my boobs to look bigger. Make my belly look smaller. People don't need to see that. Do something about my butt. My husband and I will have to look at these pictures for the next 50 years.(Dream on Girl!) Do your job. Make us look good. What? Just do it! I don't want that zit on my face to show in any of the pictures. Get rid of it. Oh. And my sister. Yes the blonde one with the big boobs. Make her flat chested and make it look like she has as cold sore. What? You've a good camera! It should be simple. And that cute little butt of hers. Make it sag. Make her boobs sag too. Nobody should look better than me. This is my day!

You guys have it all wrong: the best is photoshop.

As a pro, it's required for me to spend 4k for the best, and spend hours on each photo, regardless of what and who took it, and make it shine!

Now it's time to go back to work...have to make a digital rebel jpg file shot with that uber kit lense fit a billboard

don't forget, the "p" mode on your cameras stand for "professional"

Disclaimer - I'm an amateur who does not shoot weddings.

I went on a Canon approved wedding photography course in the K - just for fun - and "P" was the recommended mode to use (and jpeg - but that''s another question).

And I have a 5D - but you would be a mug to hire me

Why "P"?

Did they offer any sort of justification for that recommendation?

Basically they recommended flash for every shot and said it was easier with "P" mode. Additional control was gained ny using higher ISO settings when appropriate.

Obviously there were exceptions like the "backlit in the church entrance" type of shot
