Buy and Sell: On
p.1 #1 · Questions re paypal and buy/sell forum...

I have purchased several items on the buy/sell forum and have a general understanding about how things work in that regard here on FM, including the feedback mechanism (which is great by the way). For most of the items I've purchased I just sent payment via paypal, and one small item I sent a personal check for (by request of the seller).

Now I have an item that I would like to sell on the buy/sell forum and I am a little unsure of how to proceed, specifically with regard to what type of payment to request. Many of the for-sale ads I see on the buy/sell forum talk about paypal and google checkout fees. But I have never billed anyone or received payment for something through paypal or other online means...how do these fees work? My understanding was that you could just send and receive money through paypal without fees, but apparently not.

Can anyone summarize the steps I need to take to conduct a sale on the buy/sell forum?

Thank you!

in most cases paypal takes a 3% transaction fee from the seller. So if you sold something for $1000 after PP's 3% cut you would end up with a balance of $970 in your PP account.

Thanks for the reply.

So they charge this 3% on EVERY transaction, or only when goods change hands? I always assumed when I "sent money" via paypal that the full amount arrived, but if I understand correctly they've been subtracting that 3% every time I've done it in the past?

Is google checkout the same then? Or is there some better way?

Paypal charges depending on how the buyer sends money ie..echeck..credit card...bank..paypal balance

If you go to PP website I'm sure it says which one. That's is why alot of sellers in the buy/sell forum will say they will charge an extra 3%.

As for google checkout it was free, I think until the end of January. Now they charge 2%.

Okay, thanks again.

Any forseeable problems with accepting US Post Office Money Orders for payment?

Most buyers don't like to send Money order because there's no electronic record of the transaction and no protection. PP & GC allow the buyer to use credit card so if the transaction go south you can work with the bank.

Hey Brian - I've used USPS Money Orders, Bank Cashier's check, wire transfer and personal checks as a buyer. Folks using Paypal and Google may find it convenient, which it is, and may welcome the opportunity to put the expenditure on their credit card, but neither company guarantees a successful transaction. If you use either service make certain you read ALL the fine print. It is my understanding, for example, that a seller who charges the buyer more to cover Paypal fees has voided rights to the minimal protection they offer.

The key to a good transaction, whether as buyer or seller is confidence in the trustworthiness of the person with whom you're dealing. Your reputation is worth gold on this board. It is worth putting a bit of effort in to securing feedback for every transaction you do whether as a buyer or seller. I've had sellers cross ship items that cost a thousand dollars on the promise of my personal check. One person even sent a lens for me to try out with the understanding that if I didn't like it I would send it back with a ten dollar bill to cover his shipping cost. This all happened because I'd demonstrated I could be trusted to live up to my end of the deal.

Check folks out, chat on the telephone if the item is particularly valuable. If the person has a good reputation use the payment method that is most convenient for each of you. If you decide you prefer Paypal or Google, do your research!

And good luck!

Also, technically you are not permitted to have the buyer pay for or split the 3% fee. If you read your TOS, this is against their policy and you could get your bank account frozen until they figure out how to credit these fees back to the buyer. This is also true for merchant accounts like Visa, MasterCard, AMEX etc....

Granted it is a bit difficult for them to police that issue on FM but if someone complains, just be aware.

You are better off baking that fee in to your asking price.

Duncan is right about the 3% fee, that's why there're gas stations and other merchant give you a 5% discount for cash transaction.

The primary reason for using Paypal is that you know the transaction is final and you receive your money immediately. After a few times of buyers changing their minds (on ebay over the years) I decided the 3% fee is worthwhile. USPS money orders/cashiers checks are great but there is that timeframe where you are waiting...you also will get less buyers as many don't want to use this cash form of payment.
