For the past week I've been getting e-mails from a supplier of ink called
Double Inks. The prices are very tempting for a set of inks for my R 1800.
Has anyone else heard of them or tried them? Considering the cost of this printer I'm a little leery about using anything but OEM.

Even if the ink is safe to use in the printer without clogging, etc., you would need to consider the different appearance it may have on the same papers that you use now. Maybe you'd have to re-profile your printer.

There area lot of garbage inks out there. There are also some good ones.

What I want to know when looking at an ink are:

1) What is the gamut compared to the OEM ink?,

2) What kind of longevity does it have? Show me the tests, and

3) Can I get profiles from the manufacturer?

If they don't know the answers or give you some other BS - "We don't need profiles because we are a 100% match for the Epson ink" - just walk.

There are too many good ink vendors - well, really not that many - to mess with the poor ones.

Here is a Wilhelm summary of the longevity of some of the major no-name substitute inks:

Some of these crap inks are only lasting 6 months or less UNDER UV GLASS

That is bad, especiually compared to the 100 years plus for the R1800 pigment inks.

If you want names of the usual suspects for pigment inks we can list them.

Best,
Michael
