what did those people do in the falklands that caused the cameras to flip out?

If you read the LL post script on the demise of the 1Ds2 units during that Falkland Islands trip, you'll see that many of the 1Ds2 owners took weather sealing as "weather-proofing." In other words, they continued to shoot without much protection despite heavy rain fall.

DPP is full of whiners who have nothing better to do then complain, whine, & bash Canon

For example, people on DPP are whinng about no new 5D. Yet the fact is the 5D still beats out 99% of the cameras on the market today for image quality, especially at high ISO.

The latest and greatest most expensive camera will not make you a better photographer. Knowledge of photography and good technique will. You do not need the latest camera to take good photos. Photographers take good photos, not the electronics.

The forums are full of people who like to complain & moan about Cameras.
What we need in the forums is people who enjoy photography, not whining.

People who want to talk about how to get better photos wtih the cameras we have. To teach each other how to be better photographers.

Give Canon time and the Nikon forum will have the same switch headline.

p.3 #5 · How many leaving Canon?

While I have a lot of sympathy for what Canon has put MkIII buyers through here in the last year or so, I don't really get why people are actually moving to Nikon (except for the pros who absolutely depend on having the latest and the best for their livelihood.) Particularly given that Canon's long lenses are less expensive and they've been out with IS for many years. I'm even planning a painful supertele purchase down the road despite all the hoopla over these glitches. It's not as though Canon's engineering/manufacturing expertise has suddenly come to an end and their camera operations are through. They screwed up on at least one body (not the first time the "next generation" in a product line has experienced issues.) It may take them awhile to fix it or implement a redesign of the technology. But it will happen. Patience, grasshopper....

I'm staying with Canon! My MKIIn's working great. For the time being, I'm buying L Lenses instead of any MK III bodies.

The MK III's inherent design flaws may never effectively fix the damage to the market for any MK III body produced to date. The future will reveal what happens to the existing fleet of purchased MK III bodies, as well as future production runs of MK III series bodies.

Moreover, the competition (read: NIKON and SONY) are breathing down CANON's neck with lower priced FF Sensors, better High ISO performance, Higher Res LCD displays, and more.

At this point I'm content to wait and see how CANON responds over the next 12-24 months. I remain confidently optimistic that they will eventually get things straightened out and that whatever their next series SLR is, it will be a definitive killer SLR.

I'm still using both, but then I tend to date 2 or 3 women at once. The more the merrier...

I'm still in trauma from the bad divorce with Nikon, my issues were lack of full frame, lack of key primes, worse noise at high ISO. Now five years later they finally have full frame after saying they were never going to do so.

Canon has behaved disgracefully in the handling of the 1D3 fiasco, but all in all I see little reason to switch (as I do not own a 1D3) and expect Canon to continue to lead after being surprised by herculean efforts by Nikon. Competition is good and has been noted, will be getting more fierce in the future.

Why should I shift? I just don't care about his issue like 95% of the Canonists. My body works fine and always did!
So I will continue to enjoy my Canon lenses. Of course I have the notion that somewhere in the world, there are people who might have, or wish they had, a better body than I do... But for the time being, my limitations aren't due to the body I use, but much more to my skills and the time I am able to spend using my gear.

I would really be interested in what needs you have that Canon is unable to meet?

Basically, I need a weather sealed body with professional level autofocus. The 1DMkIII is, in theory, my ideal camera - which is why I bought it. I even like and benefit from the crop factor and intended to use the camera for a good many years. I shot with Nikon for 25 years and Canon for 10 so it's not like I bounce back and forth but I will change if it suits my needs which includes the reality that I'm 56 and have a definable number of good years left for shooting. I don't want to waste a shooting season.

Below is my personal eval. of Canon's bodies so you will understand why I'm not thrilled with my Canon options...

20D - 40D (Have a 20D) - Needs better AF system. Lack of weather sealing a problem. VF not great for manual focus macros. Very good camera for what it does but it doesn't do enough.

5D - Needs better AF system. Lack of weather sealing a problem. 3 FPS a deal killer. Great IQ though.

1DMkII - Bizarre two handed interface. Others love it but I don't. Heavy.

1DMkIII - Just about perfect - if it was able to focus. Still bad after two trips into service and getting BSed to death by Canon at this point. Word of a second fix indicates that the problem isn't fixed and Canon isn't getting more of my money to see if another one is any better.

1DsMkIII - Don't trust that its AF system is any better than the 1DMkIII - especially since they are apparently the same. Not really looking to drop 8 large on a body.

I moved from Nikon to Canon. Canon has awesome long lenses, IQ, easy to use user interface, and affordable lenses. AF ? I only use the center point, I don't need 100 AF points. Canon Service is great so far for me. I'm excited with 5D Mark II, will be a killer DSLR for a long long time.

I may be tempted if Nikon makes better looking bodies (with clean lines like the 5D), have 20+ megapixels and, most importantly (for me), produce some nano-crystal fast prime lenses. Plus they need to price their lenses more competitively, and make them more easily available.

I second that Gary....Images are made everyday with point and shoots or with giant space satellites. Find something you like and can afford and go shoot. It is a tool, plain and simple.

not this again guys,
why? Canon, Nikon,Sony etc...buy what suits your needs and use it.
we need to stop getting caught up in the "ive got the latest and greatest" race...what a joke.
Canon has already made the best camera on the market to date, it is already available in the shops, which model?
its the camera that suits you shooting style.
Nikon too has made the best camera and it is also available in the shops, just get what you like and stop looking over the fence.
Folks, the grass is not greener on the other side.

I will switch when they make the 85mm and 105mm with USM focus. Hoping that will be at PMA.

Aaah, this is a resurrected old thread from that time when quite a few people were having a tough time with their 1D MkIII.... .

Beni, they have a Nikkor 105mm micro IF-ED Nano Crystal Coat with SWM (equivalent to Canon's USM). That one has VR (or IS) even that is not there in the Canon's version of macro lens. You still have to wait for the 85mm though.

I am not a pro, but why would one leave canon?... or nikon?
does it mean you can`t good photos anymore with canon? (or with nikon - when better canon cameras came out?).

it baffles me, really, especially seeing this kind of discussion here
