I did a search but wasn't able to find what I'm looking for. I recently shot an event with 2 cameras and now I want to put all the images in order by shooting date/time. Is there a file renaming utility that takes into account date created as opposed to date modified and renames in that order? I know it's out there somewhere.
I don't know of one because I stopped looking years ago when I got Downloader Pro which does all of the renaming and so on during download from the cards. I haven't checked but downloader pro can probably also do what you want with the files that are already in the computer.
To do what you want you need a program that looks at the EXIF shooting data as well as the operating system data about the file such as time stamps. That would rule out many generic file renaming utilities.
Why not use Bridge? You can sort according to original capture date and then use the Batch Rename tool to rename all of the files. Pretty straight forward.
Photo Mechanic will do that for you. You can try a Demo for 20 Days. www.camerabits.com then select TRY, then chose your OS. Works great to sort sequence of images shot on two different cameras.
Downloader Pro will work on a folder as well as it works from the camera. It can identify from the EXIF data which camera was used and either rename them distinctly or combine the take in a unified sequence, either by your convention.
I use it for most of my images. I work along with another photog shooting HS sports, so we need to keep our images separate so when orders are placed, we know who's images are selling and who gets paid.
Here is another free program that I've found very useful:
www.irfanview.com
It is a great/fast image viewer but can batch rename and batch downsize images very quickly. I have used it to rename files based on date-time when using multiple bodies (just have to sync their clocks prior to shooting).
Best,
Andy
