I was approached by someone to sell one of my pictures to be included in a book. It's the first time somebody's asking this of me, I have no clue about how much I can charge for it. They are quite flexible on the rights.
How much do you recon I can ask for it? Partial rights or full rights.
It's an architectural book. The pic is supposed to be A4 in size. Circulation, .... I don't know yet. Normally it will be Country wide, maybe Europe wide.
That's a tough question. Why not check with a few agencies to see what they would charge? At least that would give you a starting point with your potential client.
FotoQuote should be able to calculate the price. IIRC for book pricing you'll have to pay the shareware fee--only brochure pricing is available for free to hook you.
I wouldn't give up rights on the image myself, so on the surface my answer would be no, pending more research.
You may find that they will demand you sell them the copyright. I don't know what it is about European publishers regarding buying the image and copyright too. In negotiations with a UK publisher, they insisted on buying the copyright and equally I refused. In the end, they baulked at the price I was asking and said that they could get a UK photographer who would charge a third of what I was charging per image. I suggested that they go ahead and find one. The subject was...Australian wildflowers. Hmmm...I live in Australia and they don't! Go figure!
I have a feeling that this will turn out the same way. They came back to me saying that they forwarded my conditions to the customer and would get in touch with me once they've gotten a reply.
