Hi all,

I'm thinking about buying the new Nikkor 24-70mm for landscape shooting but I was wondering if someone here could post a sample (preferable same scene) for focal lengts of 24, 50 and 70mm from this lens. I would appreciate it greatly!

You didn't mention what body you'd be using this on, but I would not buy it for the D80 (JMO). It is a stellar lens and I currently use it on the D3, but in your case (if you're using the D80) I think I would wait for the new 16-85.

hi tkearney, yes I'm using the D80. I don't think the new 16-85 will be fast enough for me because I live in area (Iceland) were we don't have much light during the winter time, so I think f/3.5 won't cut it.

Why not go with the 17-55? The 24 isn't very wide on that D80.

I'll have some images for you in a few days. Just snatched up the lens from B&H. I just sold my 17-55 for a pretty good price too!

Thanks j.curtis - looking forward to see the pictures.

I'm told that the image quality of 24-70 is better than from the 17-55, also my plan of lens linup for the next few years are like this.

Wide = Nikon 12-24mm or Tokina 12-24mm
Midrange = Nikon 24-70mm
Telephoto = Nikon 70-200mm
Macro = Nikon 105mm

My thinking is that the 24-70 would be great for default lens because I think for the wide lens you can take your time to change if needed because most often the subject isn't going anywhere.

What do you think of this lineup? I think I would have most bases covered with it for what I'm doing most now, landscape and nature pictures.

Get rid of the Tokina and it's a very nice line up. Wish I had your funds!

Hehe... yes, still thinking about the Tokina - it is getting so good reviews. But sure, having all Nikon lineup is tempting.

Ah the funds... it comes and goes hehe... I will buy this over some time, probably getting 24-70 first and then 70-200.

I also like to take time with each new lens to learn of their strength and weaknesses (if there are any).

I have the 24-70 and am very impressed with it @ F2.8. I believe that it is better than my Canon 24-70. Stopped down to F8 + I don't think you can go wrong. That said you don't think of this lens first thing because you are paying for a fast F2.8 FF zoom.

I'm sure the 24-70 is a great lens but if you're shooting landscapes on a crop sensor body I can see a couple of issues: 1) 24 isn't all that wide when you factor in the 1.5 crop and 2) You should probably be stopping down a fair bit and using a tripod for landscapes anyway. For me the focal length is too long on the wide end and it's too expensive if you're not going to be using the f/2.8.

I agree that the new 16-85 or 18-70 would be more affordable and usable alternatives for landscape work.

well I'll get a 12-24mm for landscape "overview" shoots but I would like to use the 24-70mm as a walk around lens. Currently I have the 50mm f/1,8 and I love it but... often you can't step that extra step forward which sometimes is needed.

Here in Iceland the days are often quite dim during fall/winter so light sensitivity is very important to get the shoots without needing to bump the ISO to "too much" noise area.

If I would buy for a landscape photography, I would buy the 12-24mm first, the 70-200mm second and the 24-70.. last. ... but this is my personal opinion. I always wanted wide or tele.

Another option is to invest in a setup to make mosaics (on my list).

I ordered the 24-70mm myself, but I want to do portrets most. For (indoor) portraiture its a great focal length on crop camera's.

Thanks all for the info's and your replies.

I was wondering though because I saw a discussion about teleconverters that it could give you interesting range if you would put a TC-1,4 on 24-70 lens and you got yourself a range of 50-150mm on the D80 or 61-178mm with TC-1,7.
As the image quality of the lens is excellent the TC's shouldn't decrease it much I think.

Btw. Are TC's possible to use with all lenses?
