p.1 #1 · First shot with DIY flash diffuser

Ok you guys got me. My initial intentions to shoot with natural light has taken a bit of a turn. With all the posts and talk about DIY flash diffuser, I thought I would give it a try. It's been raining this weekend, so I tried out my new set up indoors with this daddy long legs.
canon 20D, tamron 90mm f2.8 di, canon 580exii speedlite, diy flash diffuser

Well done Hung. I tried using a flash today and even with a home made diffuser it still blew out all the colours. You've done much better than me.

cheers

Excellent shot - legs all over the place

Preston - you may find you need to play with the FEC a bit if you were using TTL. With my sigma flash I have to use -1.66 FEC to stop blow outs.

thanks john,

actually i guess what i used was more of a bounce card than a flash diffuser. i can't take any credit for the design. i wanted to try something simple just to get a better feel for how the flash works with the camera. i just used a piece of paper taped to the flash. someone posted a link to a site that showed how to make one. here it is.

http://abetterbouncecard.com/

here is what my set up looked like.

i set my flash to ETTL. i found that i had to shoot my camera in manual mode. when i tried to shoot Av, i was getting way to slow of a shutter speed. i was set to f8-11, tv= 1/125, iso=200. i would manually focus. if the pic was too dark or too bright, i would adjust the flash FEV +2/3 etc.

this is all quite new to me, so i am still trying to figure things out.

here's a couple more shots from tonight. i'm already thinking of modifying the flash. still getting some uneven lighting and harsh shadows.
