I started taking photos for a local start up magazine about six months ago. I offered to work for free for a year to gain experience since I had never shot people. The local magazine has now expanded to three magazines and they have offered to start paying me which is great except I have to tell them my rates.
My problem is, I do not know what to charge. The writers make a $100 per story and I am the sole photographer. Prior to me they were using stock photography or photos submitted by the writer.
Do I charge by:
1. the photo
2. the photo shoot
3. Do I charge more for cover photos than a photo used within a story?
I am not sure what to do and felt some of you out there must have had the same questions when you were first starting out. I value and appreciate your input and hope that I am not wasting your time. Thanks for reading...
