p.1 #1 · Not necessarily much to look at, but I'm thirlled......

Now I admit, this shot is not much looking at it. One might even refer to it as a "snapshot". But once you know the background story.....

This is taken while sitting on top of my 1800lbs Warmblood horse about 10 feet in the air. I had to kind of drop the reins, yet control him. Now add to this that I had my American Shetland Pony 2,5 year old stallion on a lead rope, a lead/leash for horses, with me - so I was in fact trying to control two horses while shooting & aiming at this little bird only 9 inches tall far off for the lens I was carrying. This is shot with a super cheap super zoom, the Tamron AF Aspherical XR Di LD (IF) 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 - - not a super sharp lens at all.... This is taken while out on the trail with the two horses & yes I state it again - - I'm on top of the horse with the camera & attempting to control both horses & the camera.

So you judge the difficulty..... All I know is that I now know is that I now just have to start hanging out by the horse path next to the freeway & hope to catch this little bird again with a better lens, tripod & nice weather. Wish me luck. Until this afternoon I'd not ever seen a Kestrel in person, but I'm thrilled to say I correctly identified the bird immediately which means I'm getting more observant.

This is an 80% crop of the shot as I felt 100% just was not up to par. Also, the crop may not agree with some people & I see that, but I didn't want to just have a tiny shot of a tiny Kestrel. Here I feel we see it in it's environment. But if you have an idea for a crop I'm more than glad to hear or see it.

Thanks for looking

Lil

it's a great shot Lil, considering your tasks at hand. You painted a wonderful image of you and the horses....quite a visualization.

Thanks Dave....

I should have my husband take a shot of me doing this....

Add a riding helmet, sun glasses, headphones for my iPod, a whip (in case attacked by human, dog or.....) & my water bottle attached to the saddle. Oh I'm also sitting in a English Dressage saddle, so no horn etc of a Western saddle to help me.

- - I must be such a sight.

NIce shot, especially with all the tasks at hand. The kestrel is one of my favorites to see and very tough (for me) to get close to. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for commenting. This is the first time I've ever seen one. I'm so happy I got a few I'm "happy" with. Now I'll be looking around for it more. It's so pretty/beautiful...

Video of you shooting this would be nice! The story does make the picture and make the picture worth looking at. Sometimes great efforts go into what we know will not be our best pictures. Geez, I don't know how many times I spent forever setting up a shot with my point and shoot only to get a well composed snapshot at best.

I hope you get this little guy with the good stuff, look forward to seeing it.

Super comp, Lil! With a better setup and some stability, this one could be way cool! (Having tried to take photos many times from horseback, I empathize with the problem of trying to get a great shot from an unstable substrate...)

video request acknowledged. We'll see - -

I hope I'll catch this little bird with the better stuff & without the horses moving about. Focusing will for sure be easier & better.

Thanks for commenting Tim

Thanks Susan - - now that I've found the little guy/gal I will do my best to try to catch him/her with the good equipment. One more area to stake out.

Horses are not good as tripods.

Lil, I believe you did a wonderfull job with that shot and your commentary made it even more valuable. Cropping and compositing a shot is a matter of personal taste. I personally like the composition as iy gives the sense of the bird sitting high in a tree. Congrats on getting close enough to captutrea very nice shot.

Thank you Socrate. Yes it was way up high in the tree & with that my horse was very beneficial. I feel the story is needed as if I don't add that it just looks like a snapshot. Here I did so thinking (fast) I shot this 5fps to counter mine & the horse's movements. I boosted the ISO to get shutter speed & aperture I hoped would help - - so some thinking was put into it.

I'm glad you made the comment on cropping & composition - - it is a matter of personal taste, which is often forgotten.... This was the crop which worked for me, but I am still willing to hear/see if someone has a better idea for me.

Thanks

Ok, Lil. I'm offering you a different compo. I'm not saying it is better or worse it is just different. I'm not saying I like mine better either. As I said compo is a matter of personal taste. I'm just giving you a different view so you can develope your own skill, and taste. I hope it helps.

Lil, given the circumstances, I think you did a wonderful job. The storyline sets it up perfectly, I'm sure I would have ended up on the ground!

Hi Li'l,
I'd leave the crop as is. The layering of the subtle strip of cloud and the parallel branches kind of makes the eye climb to see the subject which in turn is then looking back down to the bottom starting the process over and over (maybe I shouldn't drink beer while I surf FM?). I also think you should saddle up that Shetland pony with a tripod mounted 600mm and go back and get some more shots!

Socrate - - I like the way you think, it is a crop I was considering. So I'm glad to see the similarities...

Thanks,

Thanks Doug,

I started riding when I was 5 years old & have spent probably around 30 years or so in the saddle or bareback on a horse. I've taken many falls, but this guy doesn't throw me. We have 11 years together so a large amount of bonding has gone into it. He knows me well & I him.

A large amount of trust goes into it. It's a pain to focus etc though.

Hi Steve,

thank you - - I've left the crop this way cause that's what appealed to me the most. I feel it speaks within the shot....

I may just give in & buy a 600mm MF lens. I can not afford a AF lens - - but maybe the MF. It would work in situations like this for me.

Don't think ColieOlie (the Shetland) will approve of it mounted on his back though.

Thanks,

Lil

Lil,

I've been eyeing the Tamron 28-300 mm lens for bicycling, travel, etc.. You mention it not being sharp but wondering how you like it overall.

Thanks!

Hi John,

As for not being sharp.... I'm comparing it to some rather superior lenses. I have a folder you may find interesting.... Nikon lenses vs Tamron lens. In this folder you will find it pinned against two consumer Nikon lenses. One is a 10x zoom while the other is a shorter zoom. With any lens like this, you have to stop down to get sharpness out of it. I've actually only used this lens when out for rides with the horses. Sitting on top of a 1800 lbs horse which is not standing perfectly still means not being super sharp. That's what I meant more than anything.

I would think that stopping to an f/9 & bumping your shutter speed will help & increase sharpness. Will it compare to a Nikkor pro or a Canon L lens - - don't think so. But for a lens that costs less than 1/5th of the big name lenses.... What do you expect?

I think the lens is probably fine for travel & the way I use it when I go riding. I bought mine used for $ 175.00 - - It's fine for that & I don't think I've done a bad decision.

Lil, I painted a different picture of the scenario when I read the first line.....I thought you were on the horse and 10ft in the air!! So the whole things sounds quite easy to me now............just kidding!
Got that Kestrel, I am sure you will go back for more, they are neat and pretty, too bad they are so small. I think your 'cheapo' lens held up real well to that 80% crop. I am going to guess you will soon have a pack mule to carry all your gear on your next trail ride/photo shoot.
Take care.............I will expect more of this Kestrel from you soon.

Good one Karl,

funny you should write that today. I saw him again today. First time since this shot was taken. So I know he's still around. Not exactly the same spot but close enough. I will however bring out the "big" lens & try to get shots from the ground.

You're right, it is a 80% crop so the cheap lens did well.....

Lil, Under the conditions you describe you got a great image. Kind of reminds me of shooting a Powerboat Race from a boat that was rocking back and forth from the wake of all the monster boats. What matters most is that you took advantage of the moment and got a great shot. Much better than any Kestrel shots I have, which is "Zero".

Take some images of your Horses and show us sometime.

Thank you Grant. I saw the little Kestrel again today. Not a good photo op as it was backlit & not good for photography. But I saw him again so I know he's still around. I will try to locate him under better circumstances soon. Especially now that I've found him again. I have not seen him since this was taken.

I see so much wildlife & I want to document it. So now I ride with one of my dslr cameras around my neck when I go on trail rides.

Kestrels are small. Until about a month ago I'd not ever seen one. I wish you a nice hovering Kestrel soon....

As for the horses - - there are shots of them on my Zenfolio site & I posted a few my husband shot not long ago in this thread. Shots taken for just the fun of it all....

I hope you'll enjoy looking at my boys.

Lil
