Like a lot of things in life you first have to find your subject, diagnose it, using the tools at hand make the necessary changes for a better outcome. Take control of the subject and then take control of the light , Master the Light .

Tom I really like that first one, has kind of a metallic look feel to it, the colors on that dragonfly are spectacular, looks like colors on chrome. Very neat picture.

The first two shots stand out for me -excellent color and contrast. I also like the shot of the jumper taking down a damselfly -amazing how they can catch something several times their size and weight...

ANother beautfiul series. I noticed that you shot dragonflies with both the 300 F4 (in another post) and the 180. I was wondering what might make you choose one over the other - I know there is greater working distance with the 180 and you can get to 1:1 , but I was wondering if there was any other "look" that you find distinctively works for one over the other or if it is only dicated by ditance/how close you want to get (or what lens you are carrying around) - I'm curious as we just bought a 300F4, but I also always like the 180L shots I see around here, so I am curious what makes someone choose one over the other for particular shots.

Amy with over 50 lens , 17 SLR film bodies, 3 DSLR , 9 Rangefinder cameras and shooting both system (Canon -Nikon) I don't have a shortage of stuff to use . But to answer your question I shoot what I have at the time , or when I see a lot of similar Question asked or people saying you can't do this or that , I take the this or that , I go do it and post the outcome for all to see and show them it can be done. This way the newbies don't get lead astray and think that the only way they are going to get macro type shots is have a macro lens , and that's certainly not the case.

Thanks Karl, I actually have a shot of the back of a dragons head that looks like it really is chrome plated, very cool shot , I see if I can't find it .
