What apertures do you find yourself shooting at most when doing close-ups?
John using the 180 I'm prone to use F5.6 most for close ups , a lot will depend on the angle and the background . If the background is clean or some distance away I'll shoot smaller like f 8 or 11.
With the 500D on front of any lens I'll be at f 8 all the way to f 22 or so.
Thanks all for the nice comments , we actually have quite a few macro people using a 300 f4 for dragons ,some are Canon shooters and others use Nikon , all give excellent results and sharpness with maximum working dist.
