I'm new to this forum, though I've been lurking for awhile. I'm a USMC Combat Photographer, but I also like to shoot on my own. I have a Web site going up shortly to showcase my personal work, and here is just one photo I've taken recently this year that I'd like some comments on. It is a manual combination of two images I took for exposure purposes (sky vs ground). Settings were Canon 40D with Canon EF-S 10-22mm, f/22, ISO 200.
Very pretty picture. I like the colors and the contrast between land and sea. The sky is nice too.
I think a landscape with more sea to left would be better. With a little less top of clouds. The horizon is at 50/50 where it is best a 1/3 down.
On the technical side, I would move back to f11 on this picture. The 20d gets lots of defraction noise after f11 and with the wide angle lens you are using at f11 it should be focused from 3-infinity with f11, so why choose a soft part of your lens.
Very nice though - it works even though it ignores the horizon rule of thumb.
Thank you. I had thought about the horizon rule when I took the shot, but after comparing ones that followed it with this 50/50, I actually felt that the 50/50 worked better in this case. I'll also note the f/ issues for the future.
