p.1 #1 · how many shots?

howdy, gang! i appologize if this has been discussed before, but i haven't had much time to spend on the fred lately. so, here goes: given a typical wedding day, how many images do you shoot? no right or wrong here, just curious if there's a trend. i know some have philosophies one way or the other, but i'm just curious about the statistics.

soon.

We shoot the exact right amount for that particular wedding. Not one more, not one less.

We deliver 800-1200.

Ceremonies I shoot about 1000, deliver 400 proofs for album/print selection. If I do prep shots (make up, getting dressed, etc), add about 200 and 100 respectively. If we do portraits in the park, add about 400 and 200.

This was discussed at length just a month or so .. I'd encourage you to search the archives for the thread as it's pretty interesting .. one guy (forget his name) shoots a ton (something like 5,000 photos) and his work is awesome. Maybe he'll come in and post on this one as well.

Personally I'm very much on the low end .. shoot just over 1,000 and deliver maybe 400.

Approx. 1200 to 1400. That is both Dennis and I. I'm probably 800 and he's round 600.

take between 700-800 on average for an 8 hour wedding. Edit down to about 400 then chose and show the best 250-300. Any more than that and I find my clients get bored.

take about 1000, and edit down to 600-700. even then, i think it's way too much for most people to deal with. i'm looking to get it down to under 500 this year.

I want to deliver less as well (less total images means more better images), 1000 shot edited to 500 should do it.

When I get to shooting 600 and delivering 400, that should really do it.

I shoot about 1000 and deliver around 300-400. I cannot imagine giving 800 or more shots to the wedding couple. I am sure that they enjoy the first run through, but then when they actually have to decide which ones that they want that has to be a huge mountain.

This might strike a nerve, but if you deliver 800-1000 shots how many of those extra shots take away from some of your other shots that would easily stand on their own? I would think that I would rather look at 10 awesome shots than 100 with some mixed in with that.

Holy cow! I can't believe how many you guys shoot. Thats just insane.

I shoot 500-800 for an 8-10 hour day. Deliver ~350. I was contemplating delivering even less.

Why is you that deliver 500+ images feel the need that need to produce that many?

Shoot about 1000 and deliver 300-400. And they get about 200-250 more from my second photographer, if they chose that option...

My guiding principle when deciding whether or not to take a shot, and whether or not to edit a shot, is quality over quantity. I made the mistake early of delivering way too many images to clients, and the feedback I got was that they were overwhelmed, many of the photos looked the same, etc... So now they only see my best. Not only is it better for them but its better for business!

Why is it when someone does something different it is wrong, or insane?

Our customers love us, they seek us out because we deliver quantity AND quality. We typically deliver 1000 images and for us that is perfect.

A lot of our business is referral from very happy customers. And we have NEVER had a complaint about too many images. If anything, it helps our print sales.

We never look at those who deliver less and think they couldn't do better or their deliverable is lacking compared to ours. Each artist delivers their product in an individual way and that's what their clients want.

i do think there is some tendency to think that more is better, but that's just asinine, at least down to a certain point. i mean, if you charge average price and only deliver two hundred images....i think the customer got hosed. however, i don't think someone who delivers 2x as many as i do is some kind of hero, either.

basically, what the answers here tell me is that the 750-1200 that i shoot singlehandedly on a wedding day (not counting bridal sessions, etc.) is certainly a decent number. i know i work hard to cover as much as possible, and i also know that i occaisionally hit the button more than once just to make sure i get the shot. ultimately, i typically deliver between 500 and 800.
