this isn't the "normal fare" for me, but as i was traveling from chicago to iowa city for new years (with a stop over on the Mississippi for the eagles) and was greeted with absolutely haunting driving conditions. Freezing fog, ice everywhere, no visibility.
Beautiful photo opportunities. Made for some eerie scenes...
the "freezing fog" really created an awesome scene large and small scale. this isn't accumulating snow, the moisture in the air actually freezes on surfaces (usually depending on wind direction). up close, everything looked covered in deadly spikes... (which were actually unbelievably delicate.)
i'm actually going to be doing a write-up on this whole set, so if you would like to comment on any "stand-outs", i'd really appreciate it, as i will not use 15 images in the write-up.
Fantastic stuff, Dan!
I know it's tough to drive in, but man, gotta love that light and atmo!
Love 'em all, but especially 1st, 3rd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 10th, and of course the 'I was there!'!
Terrific work!

What a cool set! I really enjoyed this whole series, especially the fenceline, 'blanketed', and 'on the edge of the abyss'. I have driven to work in similar conditions on numerous occasions, and can really appreciate these images. Thanks for sharing all of these.

Very interesting set Dan. If it were me I'd still be clinging to the steering wheel trying to get to my destination
The scenes are certainly haunting.
Well done.
David
thanks for the feedback everyone. in all honesty, it's more positive than i would have guessed.
while it was tough driving, it was remarkably peaceful shooting. i guess normally during the "golden hour", i often feel like i'm racing against time... with the light running out. this light (and mood) was utterly constant all morning.
i kept shooting because it was captivating, but i was also stalling... hoping that conditions would improve. they didn't
Again, i appreciate the feedback, the specific image picks, and the encouragement to try to sell a few (i'll be sure to try...)
www.rednow.com is a site that my friend started, mostly after and through conversations about importance of "wonder" (rednow = wonder backwards). i contribute sometimes to the "photography" section, but the site is a lot more focused on music, film, & culture. feel free to check it out...
Not a day to be out in a car!
I particularly like 4 and 5 for their pleasing compositions.
9 is also great but I wished it had some white space around the right side too.

These are wonderful shots and make me envious of your winters.
No 1 is a great composition of three and is very pleasing to the eye. No 4 is another favourite of mine.Very nice work.
Super series, Dan. I love being out on the road in these conditions. The atmosphere is lovely and there's usually very little traffic. Your pictures really get the atmosphere of these conditions over very well indeed.
