p.1 #1 · Field of view question (crop vs. full frame)
I'm having a discussion with someone and cannot seem to be able to Google the answer to our topic of debate.
Does a 12-24mm DX lens on a crop body provide the same field of view as a "normal" 12-24mm lens on a full-frame body?
I argue that the field of view should be the same in both instances while he argues that you still have to multiply the focal length of the DX lens by ~1.5 to get the approximate equivalent focal length, and thus field of view of the image, for the crop body.
From what I understand, the whole point of DX lenses is that for crop bodies, they provide the true field of view indicated by their focal lengths. I'd really like to know if I'm wrong about this so that I can learn what's actually correct. Thanks for the help.
p.1 #2 · Field of view question (crop vs. full frame)
As far as I have seen, all focal length measurements are expressed as full frame equivalents. They all have to have a crop factor applied to determine what the field of view actually is on the camera body you are using.
The DX thing just means that when the lens was designed or updated it was optimized for use on a digital body.
