Hi everyone,
As you may know, our private message (PM) section of the forum is very active. In order to diminish the size of the PM database and speed up the forum, private messages will be deleted if older than 60 days. This will happen slowly but will reach its goal soon.
You may start getting emails about deleted PMs.
In these emails, you will be provided with a copy of your deleted PM(s) as well as with a link to Edit your Profile and turn this notification off if desired.
To stop the email notification for deleted PMs, you must set "Email on PM auto-delete?" to "NO".
The option is set to "Yes" by default.
Fred
Fred..........
I got "NO link" in my message, JUST TONS of Messages....
And am personally insulted that you could not even have the "Courtesy"
to send us an email to let us know the problem and ask us to delete them
or that you were about to do this?
****I think it was handled VERY abruptly and rudely......
If you had the ability to make a post or send back PMs to OUR address you CERTAINLY had the Option to be polite and let us know this was going to happen...
I KNOW you need to continue to improve things and that part I am not complaining about.....just your Rude method..... Very Poorly handled...
NO notice and as I said...NO link..... Sometimes it's not What you do but HOW you do it.... got it?
I wouldn't describe what happened as rude. Your response, though, would classify as rude. If you had a problem, why didn't you send a PM or e-mail to Fred and do it privately?
I was worried about member’s pms being deleted. We worked out a way to send emails as a backup. I thought I was being courteous by emailing copies of member’s private messages.
The first few emails were sent without the "edit profile link". Once I saw that happening, (after a few minutes) the link was added to the messages and the option to turn this "feature" off. This process will continue until we have about 2 months worth of PMs. Once that happens, the site will keep this level automatically.
My apologies to BodieAngels and anyone else insulted by this.
Fred
Its great. I was worried about losing anything that I might want to keep, and low and behold, I get an email, so I can see if I want to save it myself.
Thank You Fred....
For admitting the truth of the matter....and I have already deleted "ALL" of the messages in my Outbox and my Inbox is NOT FULL?? so why am I still for the last 3 hours still getting them in by dribs ands drabs... this is just wierd... first they came from Apache..now they are coming from FM@fredmiranda. ??
If you maybe would tell us HOW many is considered FULL we could Police ourselves and keep the limit UNDER that
....as I said, it was not WHAT you did, but HOW you did it.....

in gratitude,

The emails from apache were the first ones and didn't came with the link. The ones from [email protected] provide a link to edit your profile and turn this feature off. BTW, you can edit your profile and change "Email on PM auto-delete?" from "Yes" to "No".
Once you set it to "No", you won't get any more PM backup emails.
Another change that we made was that you will only get a backup of a PM that was in your Inbox. Before the backup PM was being sent to the sender and recipient.
If anyone has PMs not older than 2 months and is still getting emails, please let me know. That should not happen.
Fred,
If see you have Finally ADDed a "PM" link at the top toolbar on the Front Page
of Each forum......THANK YOU!!! ,....... so we could access our PMs when we
do not have a current email about one, so it will help us maintain our folders....
This has been VERY frustrating for a LONG time....
that we had NO way to access them in between PMs.....
However.... you still have not stated HOW many is considered FULL?
and if the box is NOT full why are they being deleted?
Oh GROW up guys.... I did NOT say that I was NOT appreciative
of everything Fred has done over the years or I WOULD not BE a PAID member
and also a forum founder and moderator.
I said I was upset about the way he handled this ONE thing....
AND his reply VERIFIED that I got caught in the middle of the "mistake"
of the way they were sent out!
If people can't honestly air their feelings when a mistake has been made
....what good are forums
And as I use the PMs to help with members it WOULD help if he would
"Communicate"....isn't that what being a Moderator is ALL about??
I STILL do NOT know HOW many is considered FULL or is that NOT an issue
any longer?? So we can have 200 in the box as long as they are less than 2 months old?
I don't think so?? but I KNOW better than to ASSUME!!!
I will ask until I receive an answer..........
There are ways to comment which are acceptable and ways which are not. A simple question expressed without a surfeit of capital letters, even stating that it would have been nice to have been notified would have been fine - but the rant above is ridiculous in the circumstances.
It is obvious that huge amount of work is going on to improve the code and things will happen which are not perhaps ideal in those circumstances.
If there is any growing up to do you are looking in the wrong direction.
the way this was handled was my fault, not fred's. Coding new email-sending code is always tricky: everything else you can test in more or less similar environments. Please accept my apologies. I thought it more important to err on the side of data preservation.
The code auto-deletes any message older than 60 days, to the second. I am not aware of any other limit on pm volume. The only people who received large numbers of emails will be those who have very large numbers of PMS sitting on the server.
The notifications should contain up to ten pm's at a time, to reduce traffic.
The answer to nelcha's question is that pm's are deleted after 60 days, and there appears to be no limit on how many you can have.
One question: does anybody think the sender should receive an auto-deleted pm too? I do.
Thank you Brainiac for your reply.
May I ask you to clarify something else? My INBOX has always told me when it considered itself "Full in Big Red" letters....at which time I would dutifully delete some messages....So now you are saying there is NO limit?
So this is now something new?? OK, just seems strange.....
Please note..I am not yelling..I am just stressing a point as we lose vocal intonation and body language with the written word...OK?
It "was" my Sent folder that was deleted so I did get the copies....
and you are now questioning if the Sender should receive an auto-delete PM?
or do you mean copy of the PM deleted? Sorry, but I am not a coder so I do not speak your language....If you are asking if we should receive copies of "anything" deleted I would respond emphatically "yes!"
Also, as I stated before, if it was you THANK YOU for making it possible for us to access our PM folders in between receiving PMs.... I "Really" appreciate that...
Many times we are too busy to deal with an issue when the PM arrives but can not re-access it if we do not keep the original email letting us access it.... so this is a "Big" improvement....
.......but not being informed of the changes prior to things starting to happen was a "Big" shock.....I think the failure to communicate "this event" and it's changes in advance was the biggest issue.....having been a paid member for years.....
