Thank you all very much for your comments. I enjoyed doing it, we had such fun. Each time I lent in to see in the view finder I nearly (and sometimes did) head butted my mum off the scales!
The red writing on the scales says "Danger Fatty" and is something my Mum wrote on there a few years ago when she reached her goal weight and wanted to avoid it creeping up again!
When I originally had the idea, I wanted the scales to be sharp and the festive debris to be out of focus so played around with raising the scales on a pile of books to increase the distance between the dial and decorations. I achieved the shallower depth of field but the all in focus results were better.
The photo was taken upside down to keep the tripod out of shot then flipped in photo shop for the familiar view point of the scales.

You got off your backside and shot something, mine however is contemplating getting larger and the Xmas excess did not help. Although the grape juice consumed was very nice.
