So far i like the 5D' s IQ but don't know how well the 5D handle the left/right eyes shooting when you are in portrait/landsacpe mode. Can 5D copy cat the 1D series eyes snapping features. This is the only thing keep 5D away from my backup list. Thanks
I was about as die-hard a 1Ds Mark I enthusiast/user as they come. I owned both the 5D and 1Ds at the same time and refused to sell my 1Ds for all of the reasons others have posted here. I stated many times over in more than one forum that the 1Ds provided a special "something" and that its files were unique, captivating and more like film than most other DSLRs.
Well, I've now spent considerable time with both cameras. The 1Ds is now gone, and I have no regrets ... although I do miss that fantastic 1-series build.
To my mind, there is no question that the 5D is the better camera of the two as an overall photographic tool. It will enable excellent captures in a wider variety of situations and, bottom line, the files are cleaner, better delineated, less "digital" and more color accurate.
Additionally, the battery life is substantially better, the LCD is light years better, the review time is fantastically faster, the ergonomics and ease of use ... well, there's no comparison there.
Many will disagree, and I understand why. The "film grain" look of the 1Ds files at higher ISOs are very alluring, and the files often do seem to be "sharper" right out of the camera. Portraits, in particular, are quite exceptional when drawn by the 1Ds.
But the 5D is at least its equal in most regards and is simply better if what you want are as many "keepers" as possible. The very best lenses make the 5D REALLY shine.

I am hardly an expert - and this question can be answered by anyone who uses a camera with a battery grip. Plus, I am left eyed, so it never occurred to me that one would switch eyes between portrait and landscape orientation. So there you have it - I am useless
