The only time I tried to order from B&H they were a total pain in the ass. In-stock items were going to take 2-3 days to prepare (no, not ship, to simply package), and this was not even in some hot holiday time of the year.
I could have driven from Detroit to Manhattan to pick the stuff up quicker than they can pull it from the warehouse? WTF?

BH is hands down one of the best. It's clearly stated that your order will not ship the same day if you choose anything less than a rush order. Non-rush orders do not specify how long your order will take to actually ship, but I've found it takes 2-3 days. With me, if I have an important or expensive item (and a $1k order is piddle in the grand scheme of BH) I'll ship it overnight. You know what? Every order I've done that way arrives overnight! I had a non-photo gear shipment for Priority 3 day USPS on December 12th. I received the item, with much fretting, on Dec. 27th. Tis the season for slow shipping. And yes, if you really had an important thing that you needed the gear for, buck it up and do a rush order.

Rene,
if you live in NYC and are already paying the tax, why don't you just go to B&H and buy in store, rather than having it shipped to your place?
because it is located very near madison square garden, the main post office, jacob javits center, macys herald square, parking around there is almost 30 bucks anyway, and they close at 1 on fridays and all day Saturday. It is easier to just ship it. Plus ever tried taking a Manfrotto boom with weights on the nyc subway. that is over 50lbs!
p.2 #5 · B&H and UPS - A marrieage headed for hell!
I live the Washington, D.C. area and learned with my first order from B&H not to waste money on 2-day or 1-day air UPS shipping because no matter what mode you pick the package "flies" about 3 ft. off the ground on a truck down I-95 and shows up in 3 days.
Conversely, UPS also seems to take some sense of perverse pride in delivering the more economical modes of shipment exactly as scheduled. I've seen stuff ordered from the west coast with 5-7 day shipping arrive at a hub in the midwest in one day, then sit there until the day before its due to be delivered.
Sometimes the routing makes very little sense. I've had stuff I ordered from Alien Bees in Nashville go to UPS hubs in Indiana, West Virginia then to Richmond before finally arriving at the local distribution center. But this time of year odd-ball routing is usually due to road conditions.
I rarely need things by a deadline so this is more amusing than frustrating for me. If I do need anything in a hurry from B&H I'll have it shipped FexEx. I've gotten stuff I order the previous day by 11 AM the next morning. The tracking seems to be more in sync with were the package actually is.

Its the Holidays stop complaining and accept that things are going to be delayed this time of year. I have purchased over 100 items from B&H and UPS and never had a single problem.

That reminds me of a TV drama last year... perhaps "ER", but the twist here was that the package arrived one additional day past the time expected thus causing the customer to show signs of RLS. That episode concluded in "Law & Order" where the judge (Judy) found the store and delivery service guilty as co-conspirators in a late delivery lawsuit. I believe Nathan Lane, star of "The Birdcage", recreated his role.

Usually my girlfriend makes coffee in the morning, even though I don't ask for it. Sometimes she's busy and doesn't. Maybe I should post about that here.

Sure thing, Cicala......probably more interesting than incessant "400 vs.400"
and "24-70 vs. 24-105" threads.
BTW, whatcha havin ? "Medaglia d'Oro", "Mauro" or "Barzula" espresso ?

Well, it's back to being monday again...it's coming...no it's not. It's coming! No, it's not.
Well....is it or isn't it?
Exception - Rescheduled - See description below is what it says on the UPS site now.
It's sitting in Maspeth, NY since 1:28 AM 1/3/08.
"exception" in UPS speak is: An exception occurs when a package or shipment encounters an unforeseen event, which could result in a change to the expected delivery day.
Isn't maspeth where the B&H warehouse is? I seem to recall seeing that name on a previous order. So umm, the truck backed over my package?

"01/03/2008 12:26 P.M. THE RECEIVER WAS UNAVAILABLE TO SIGN ON THE 1ST DELIVERY ATTEMPT. A 2ND DELIVERY ATTEMPT WILL BE MADE
01/03/2008 5:30 A.M. OUT FOR DELIVERY
01/03/2008 2:45 A.M. ARRIVAL SCAN "
2 people were home ALL day today. UPS did NOT come by and try to deliver the package, they did not leave a note on the door as they always do when they actually miss me, they just did not bother to deliver my 70-200 2.8L IS - I know how their truck sounds - they didn't even drive up the road far as I can tell. Now I have to worry about the horrors of what will happen to it for another day in their hands.

The BH web site says that RUSH orders (overnight and 2-days) ship the same day. If you didn't use either rush service, you may wait (and will in most cases). It says so pretty clearly.

No. Our main warehouse is in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Maspeth's in Queens. We also have a warehouse below our Manhattan store.

B&H's website says if you get an order in before 11 it ships the same day (that's what it said on Monday).
We regret your disappointment. We received your order Dec 31st. As another poster noted, that day and the next, 1/1, were UPS holidays. We shipped Jan 2nd.
Subsequent delays are from UPS, not B&H. Our site says we ship same day if you order before 11:00am AND if your order includes rush (2-day or overnight) shipping. When you ordered, via our web site, you selected non-rush 3-day select shipping.
We will issue a refund for the s&h fee originally applied to this order.

I don't understand this. The lens was shipped well within the stated parameters. Just because the buyer "normally" gets an order in two days doesn't change the fact that the shipment is within spec. If anything his beef is with UPS. Even then I don't think there is a problem.

Very interesting! I knew that others had to be having problems. Two orders in less than a month, both with shipping issues... grrr!
I ordered a tripod mount ring from B&H, paid 2 day delivery, it was to be here on the 4th. But UPS "missed" the package after transferring it to NJ. So, according to UPS records... my package had an "exception" but it was "on time" as it sat in NJ for 29 hours, then it was "rescheduled" and would be delivered Monday 1-7-08. We will see.
The package sat in NJ for 29 hours, in Lexington for another 24, left there this morning... has not been scanned since... this is bull, UPS didn't even try to fix their mistake.
B&H said they would refund the 2 day delivery, but that didn't help when I need the tripod collar today.
Also.. my Christmas lens that was to be here by December 14th, was delayed, sat on the UPS truck (here in town) from Friday 14th to Monday the 17th in single digit, and below freezing temps. And... the box had been opened, resealed. Lens is ok, guess they didn't need it? :P
I don't see B&H as the problem, both times they shipped quickly. Almost everyone I talk to is seeing problems with UPS. B&H does need to listen to that.
btw... mine is also Canon gear, B&H isn't the problem... so what is UPS doing with our Canon gear?
