Maho Beach

Flickr has a whole group dedicated to shooting on St. Maarten. Some pretty cool stuff. I believe the group is Airports: SXM.....

I've been there before, without camera sad to say, but it's an incredible sight.

I will be going back some day with gear in hand.

My bags are packed for Oshkosh and will be there all week. Again I have the privilege of hanging out with the "Checkertail Clan" from Kokomo Indiana and their beautiful P-51 and T-6.

RIAT -
Rich, Rodolfo, anyone else!

Needing to buy my one day ticket for RIAT, what day are you planning on being inside? Rodolfo, you're more than welcome to join me on the other day out in the field on the other side of the base, you too Rich if you're able to hang around?

I'm staying in Swindon Fri/Sat/Sun night so I'm around all weekend. We should do dinner as well.

I'm attending with my parents on Saturday - bit of a family affair, so I'll be tied down. Sunday I'll be inside with Rodolfo (hopefully!) Not got my ticket for Sunday yet, I'll be booking tomorrow. You doing Rhymes on Saturday, Kev?

I'll be getting a train from Bristol TM to Swindon, then I was going to grab the shuttle bus - Kev, could I steal a lift potentially? I'd be forever indebted to you!

On the subject of selling images I had a guy contact me to ask if he could buy a print of the UH-1V photo he had seen that was taken during the Rhode Island show in 2009. As he was specifically a Huey fan (and had previously worked on them for 9 years) and the photo was for his private collection I agreed to send him a high res file for him to get printed himself as he's in the US and I'm here in England.

I only asked him for $16 for the file, as he still has to get it printed. Now although I didn't want to ask for a lot of money I also felt the image was worth something. From his emails it was obvious he was just a big fan of the Huey, if he'd been a corporation then that's a whole different ballgame. Do you think that's a fair way to treat this deal or did I undercut myself? I've lost more than a few print sales in the past once figures were mentioned but that wan't my overiding concern here.

With Zenfolio I can have people elect to get stuff printed in Europe or US. However I only sell enough to cover my web costs in a year - if I'm lucky.

OK, I'll go for a Sunday ticket then, as I was unaware of yours or Rodolfo's plans. I'll go to Rhymes Farm on Saturday in that case. Mark, if you do make it down try to get a Sunday ticket as well and then we can all hang out in the MA2A section of the crowdline!

I could possibly give you a lift Rich but I need to be on the road very early to beat the show traffic, approx 7am. Any later and I might as well just drive up from London! If you can get a train that arrives around 7am then yes, but much later and you'd be better off on the shuttle bus as they have their own dedicated route I believe. If you're in no rush to leave after the show we could go back towards Swindon for a MA2A dinner?

I'll continue this via email with you, Mark and Rodolfo rather than bore everyone else with the plans!

I make it a point to offer a significant discount to Active Duty military and their families and I guess it works. Just sold $100 worth of prints resulting from a recent "gas-n-go" by three Hornets from the "River Rattlers" squadron based in New Orleans.

Sure, it could have been more money but I'm flattered to know my images will be hanging on the walls of the men and women who serve and the families who support them.

That seems like a fair way to handle this image. Partly because there's probably a limited audience outside of this guy for this shot. But I think I'd be more careful with some of your spectacular A2A images of fighters. Those seem more likely to end up getting used in other ways where you should expect more compensation.

But what do I know, I've never sold anything.

Too bad about the Huey's exhaust - without it I might have been able to see where I parked my car!

Thanks for the feedback Mark, Jay and Mark,

Yes, sending high-res files willy-nilly isn't a great idea, but I felt it worked well in this instance as I was sure he only wanted to make a print for himself. I should look at setting up something like a Zenfolio gallery to make sales easier but then again I get so few enquiries for print sales I've never felt the need before.

Mark, wish flights weren't so expensive to Boston now otherwise I'd love to go back to RI for the show, loved it in '09. Maybe next year?

Hi guys,

Bit off topic but this morning I had to say a painful farewell to my loyal photographic assistant, my cocker spaniel 'Jake'. He loved coming on shoots with me, would often be at my side at our local airport as the aircraft roared overhead. He lost a year long battle with cancer but remained strong and full of character to the end.

Hope you don't mind me posting a couple of shots here but it seemed fitting as he was with me when I took so many.

Gah - you know, I don't think I've ever posted an airplane picture. Around here (NYC) probably isn't the best place for aircraft photography. Yeah, you've got the big 3 airports, but..

The Jones Beach show is a total ZOO to get to, and I haven't been in a couple of years (last time I went to go, the parking lots were closed, and with a bum leg (handicapped permit...))

I miss the old Sussex airshow. I miss Flushing airport for that matter
