p.1 #1 · D3 - Boys High School BB, High ISO

I took a new D3 out for a spin and these are the boys pictures I said I'd post in a previous thread of Girs HS BB.

From the first half of a Boys High School Basketball game I shot Friday night;

I used the 200 f2 wide open and tried both ISO 5000 and ISO 4000. Now that I am familiar with the horrible but typical HS lighting I would shoot manual ISO 5000, f2, and 500ss next time out.

Minimal processing other than sharpening and resized for web. Normal "High ISO" NR in camera and everything else set to 0. I might go to low or no "High ISO" NR next time but wow, what a time saver for getting your images to publication with minimal work.

1/320s f/2.0 at 200.0mm iso4000

1/400s f/2.0 at 200.0mm iso4000

1/400s f/2.0 at 200.0mm iso4000

1/500s f/2.0 at 200.0mm iso4000

1/400s f/2.0 at 200.0mm iso4000

can you post some 100% crops. the pics look so incredibly smooth. can you show a shadow and also an out of focus part? all of the shots look great. im suprised that the sharpening for the web didnt introduce noise.

Here you go but just this one time and I’ll refrain from any additional saber rattling. I try and stay away from overanalyzing subtle differences since I’ve made my investment and try and just concentrate on getting the results I need out of the tools I have so with all due respect I’ll leave the pixel peeping to others. My main objective is to get familiar with the new body, understand optimal settings for my typical tasks that get the shot, shorten the work flow and make sure they look good in print.

1/250s f/2.0 at 200.0mm iso4000 (No crop, just resized for web)

Best regards,

George

These look mighty sharp to me George! Nice work.
Did you have to crop the feet in shot 2?

The bottom crop was in camera. Sitting on the baseline with a 200 has trade-offs. I love the benefit of full frame allowing a longer focal length and subsequent shallow depth of field and cleaner back grounds but tough to get an entire body in frame when they’re right on top of me. I’m anxious to see if rumors of some new primes in the January/February time frame pan out.

Good work George, I'm glad Nikon has finally come up with a great camera system (body + lens ) . Not like that other mob that produces very good faxes , printers, and scanners. oh and some cameras
Cheers Stewie
