p.1 #1 · PW setup help please

I've a pair of Pocket Wizards Plus IIs.

I want to fire a remote camera simultaneously with a local, master camera, the Plus 11s won't do this, I can fire a remote camera with the button on one Plus II and the remote camera with the motor dive cable attached.

I’ve emailed PW three days ago, no response.

If I add one MultiMax to the local [master] camera will it fire the remote camera with a Plus II and the motor drive cable attached?

I know two MultiMax units can accomplish this, but I don’t want to buy two more PWs.

IIRC, the MultiMax won't work with the Plus II.

Rather than pressing the TEST button, have you tried putting the PW into the hotshoe of your master camera to trigger it?

Thanks for the reply ... yes I've tried that, putting the Plus II on the master camera, that's when I discovered it would not work like that.

Well, I just tested it and it worked for me. Perhaps you have a defective unit/cable?

Well, that's a possibility, the cable and units are brand new.

I do see the remote 1D wakes up as I press the shutter button on the master 1D with one Plus II on its hotshoe, but it just does not fire.

HOWEVER, if I switch the AF to manual on the remote, it fires with one Plus II on the hotshoe of the master.

Pushing the test button fires in AF, but I notice it does not fire on the first push, it does on the second and keeps firing as long as the test button is pressed.

So that's an advance, thanks.

Do you need to have your remote in manual AF to trigger from the hotshoe of the master?

I have my AF function moved to the * button on back...so mine fires regardless if the lens is in AF or MF mode.

Pressing the Test button is basically the same as having the PW in the hotshoe of your master camera...it should transmit to the remote camera's PW to fire when the shutter is released.

If the camera wakes up when you plug in the cable, but doesn't fire when you hit test or take a picture with the master camera...check to make sure the N3 connector is fully inserted. Mine requires a firm push and the first time I tested it the camera was awake but it didn't fire...real quick I swapped out my camera trigger for a flash to make sure the PWs were working correctly and they were...swapped back to the camera and again it was awake but didn't fire...then I checked the N3 again and discovered it wasn't inserted fully. Once I got the N3 seated properly, everything worked fine.

Good luck!

Yes, I fell foul of the N3 connector not seating home enough, it does need a more than one would have thought, push into the body, I gave mine a slap actually.

Moving the focus to the * button means the lens need not be in MF, but AF function does not occur when being triggered from the remote or from the test button.

If the lens is left in AF [focus active from the shutter button] it will focus from the test button and fire; but will fire only from the remote camera no AF function in either mode.

At least I have them firing now. Do you get active AF function with yours?
