I got the same language when I sent my Mk3 in before the first fix was announced. Camera operating according to specifications. AF not working.

Sheesh.

I've tried to understand it and I'm still scratching my head

I noticed that bizarre juxtaposition also. I assume what they mean is that after they went through the whole process of examining and fixing per the customer request it was operating to spec and that the problem was the AF was not operating correctly in the first place. Jeez. They just need a little help with some basic editing.

For sure

Did a strange discovery(well strange to me...) when testing AIS-AF and OS-AF on my MIII tonight. I did the test with my 85 1.8 at 2.5 mtr. with center AF point
I used a simple pattern of lines printed on a sheet of paper (A4) for focussing. The sheet was parallel to the sensor. Beneath the sheet was another sheet, perpendicular to the focussing sheet to "measure" AF "accuracy".
You can download the "test.jpg" here if you like to see what I was focussing on, or maybe to try to repeat the test.
At first I was testing with the lines vertical. OS-AF was not very consistent when focussing on the fat lines(middle), but it was way better on the fine lines(outer). With AIS-AF on the thicker lines(middle) I got some hunting and focussing was 50/50 some FF some BF. But I got really confused when AIS-AF was spot on every time on the fine lines!
I turned the focussing sheet 90 degrees with the lines now horizontal.
OS-AF could not even get focus on the thick lines!!! NEVER! On the fine lines I eventually got focus(beep), but was very seldom ěn focus. AIS-AF never focussed on the thick lines and was erratic at the finer lines in horizontal position.

The center AF point is crosstype, isn't it? So it should be suseptable to vertical as wel as horizontal lines, doesn't it? (Please correct me if I'm wrong)

What is strange to me is that the AF point seems to be more suseptable to the finer lines, and that AIS-AF was even way better than OS-AF on the fine lines in vertical position.

Anybody a clou?

I am sending in my M3 and 400 to have them "check" it. Well see what happens I get a lot of shots that look like your street sign, not crisp but close just always soft.

Ok, mind you I am not a professional (I don't have that professional "eye" as you all do) but I think after Canon fixed the fix on my Mk3... I am happy. It seems to me that if you want the Mk3 to work you need to send in all your lenses. I don't know where this leaves any of us who on occasion would like to rent or intend on buying another lens in the future though.

That's a lovely street sign, I wish mine looked like that.

I'm really glad that they got your camera working but I really can't see sending in all of your lenses as being a viable answer for many people. For example, I have an opportunity for some unique portraits this weekend. I had been thinking of getting an 85L and this was a good reason to push me over the edge and spend the money. Can't do it if I have to send in my camera and new lens. Likewise, I can't even rent an 85L because it won't work with my body without first being calibrated.

Maybe I'm missing something but is there anybody here that would have bought an MkIII if Canon's literature said that every time you get a new lens you would have to send both the body and the lens into the elves at Canon?

no- you're not missing anything.

i had a 20d that worked fine with all my lenses. i now have a 5d that works fantastically well with all my lenses (35L, 85L, 300L, 70-200L). if my 1d3 comes back and requires that my lenses be calibrated- there's no way in hell.

you go to the mountain or the mountain comes to you. in this case, calibrating your lenses to a flawed 1d3 is the equivalent of having the mountain come to you. it's absolute blasphemy!

Thanks about the sign.
I don't think anyone would think this would be convenient way of doing things... obviously Canon doesn't see it that way I guess.

To answer your question, no I would not have to be very honest.

Henry,

Did you get a chance to read Rob's update posted today ? Between the street sign of yours which is "green" and momv's which is "Blue", do you think heavy contrast colors is playing a role ? Your lenses may not be at fault here ? If you bring Rob's update to Canon repair techs' attention, would it help ?

I dont have a III myself, but the attraction is so great I am afraid when I will swipe my CC

In all 1D-series the center AF point is cross. In the Mk III versions all 19 AF points are cross.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

MomV360,

Those images look the way I expect the MKIII files to look. Very nice. I am SO hoping mine comes back like that.

I did not send all of my lenses in though. If it comes out bad again, perhaps I'll send in my 300 and 70-200 since those are the 2 that I use primarily with the MKIII.

But regardless, this shows what can come from a GOOD FIX...

Perhaps the same tech will work on mine.

That's why I'm surprised that my MIII doesn't focus on the horizontal lines as I stated above...
